i, like many others before me, used to carp on something chronic about the MU back home (london). now i live in melbourne and rather miss it. is there a history of a musicians union in australia? what happened to it? are there other organisations who have taken over union type roles? looking forward to learning from you all.

Bloody hell, the MU here, I don't even know if it still exists! It did ages ago in Melbourne, I think Jack Varney used to run it (not sure if he is still with us, but his daughter Jaqui is) and at one stage it was very strong. Just ask Frank Sinatra about that one. Oh whoops, he's dead! Too late! The UK MU was pretty strong, I thought so, when I was a member myself for several years in the 80s/90s. They had some good benefits that made it worthwile just joining for the perks I recall. There is the MJC which is worthwile joining or SIMA if you are in Sydney. Check www.jazz.org.au maybe?
