TUESDAY 29th MARCH - 9pm ish - @ Bennetts Lane Melb Jazz Co-op presents... The NATIVES
The Natives are a relatively new quintet, acting as an outlet for impressive saxophonist Gideon Brazil's compositions and musical experiments. As its name might suggest, The Natives perform a blend of roots inspired jazz, groove-based material and a smattering of world music with an emphasis on organic group interaction rather than on the soloist. With Gideon Brazil (saxophones), Shannon Barnett (trombone), Fran Swinn (guitar), Tamara Murphy (acoustic bass) and Ronny Ferella (drums).
"Dan West's guitar wove subtle loops to form a kind of drone, merging with Brazil's understated saxophone lines and occasionally breaking off into more staccato asides.... (The Natives) coax odd time signatures into exuberant, syncopated grooves." - Jessica Nicholas, The Age
