Mark Fitzgibbon Quintet
Bennetts Lane
off Little Lonsdale Street CBD Melbourne doors open
8.30pm. Having spent much of 2003-2004 working for periods of up to six months in Hong Kong, China and Japan (that's a lot of rice) Fitzgibbon returned to Melbourne with a desire to again led his own quintet.
One of the country's most accomplished and versatile bop pianists, he was highly regarded in the London scene when he lived there in the early 90s, working with some leading groups there.
On his return here he formed the popular quintet "Go" (with an impressive frontline of trumpeter Scott 'onthetop' Tinkler and alto saxophonist Ian 'tall thin guy' Chaplin), but the group never recorded commercially.
Combining exciting young trumpet prodigy Astro-Boy look alike Eamon (Scroter) McNelis with the more seasoned, but not too salty, alto saxophonist David 'hunk or burning love' Rex (who spent most of 2003 working in London - poor thing), plus the young (is this copy AGIST or what!) team of bassist Tamara 'I-love--ya!-Tamara' Murphy and drummer Craig (Johnny Depp) Simon, this new young (yet well seasoned) Quintet proved in its 2004 premiere for the MJC to be equally as exciting, playing new compositions by Fitzgibbon.
