Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival 8th - 20th of May 2005

Following in the tradition of fringe festivals that take place alongside major international festivals around the world, three independent Melbourne organisations that present original jazz year-round, now band together for the first time to create the Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival.

Running concurrent to Umbria Jazz – Melbourne ‘05, the Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival will celebrate Melbourne’s burgeoning creative jazz scene. Ten nights of original music featuring many of Melbourne’s most celebrated improvisers, Melbourne Jazz Fringe kicks off with BIG ARSE SUNDAY… an afternoon and evening of wonderful strangeness, deep groove, dissonance, melody, cacophony and the beauty of song, at Lebowski’s (hosted by the Fitzroy Bowls Club 578 Brunswick St North Fitzroy). BIG ARSE SUNDAY will include the Melbourne premiere of Adam Simmons’ Creative Music Ensemble, Murphy’s Law, The Hoodangers, Vada, Michelle Nicole and Stephen Magnusson’s What Reason and finish up with the massive groove of Phil Bywater’s Fela Kuti tribute, Big Big Fela.

Following BIG ARSE SUNDAY is a series of performances at venues including The Make It Club’s regular haunt, Bar Open in Fitzroy, Wesley Anne in Northcote, the Time Out Café in Fed Square, Café 303 in Northcote, and La Mama Musica, which are all venues committed to nurturing Melbourne’s creative jazz scene. These gigs will include performances of regular groups and special one off collaborations featuring the Scott Tinkler Trio, world sax competition winner Jamie Oehlers and his quartet, Andrea Keller, Eugene Ball, Anita Hustas, Ronny Ferella’s Maximalists, Peter Knight, Tamara Murphy, Ren Walters, Shannon Barnett, Stephen Magnusson, Marc Hannaford, Tim Pledger, Ed Fairlie, Julie O’Hara, Ian Whitehurst, Mick Meagher, Phil Collings’ Humusic, Anthony Shulz, Mark Finsterer, Jordan Murray, Novac Conrad, Jon Delaney, Ben Gillespie, Tom Fryer, Tom Lee, Valanga Khoza, Tony Hicks, Jeff Raglus, Gideon Brazil, Kynan Robinson’s En Rusk, Phil Noy, Rajiv Jayaweera, Adrian Sherriff, Sam Bates, Dan West, Julien Wilson, Stephen Grant, and many more. Is it true that Ronny Ferella is doing a special nude gig as part of the Melbourne Jazz Fringe... can you enlighten us Gideon?

Ronny Ferella & his lovely young wife Michelle are doing a Jazz tribute to John and Yoko with a performance art piece set to ROCK this town!

The two artists will sit on the stage (chairs see below) and invite members of the audience to come on stage and paint their exposed toenails purple and green in protest at the (continuing) inequality in rates of pay between men and women tennis players at Wimbledon 2005

During the painting, Michelle will conduct the Tanunda Brass Band who will play a selection of Australian Idol hits. Ronny will cook traditional Ethiopian fasting Wat (dahl) which he will offer to painters for sustenance during the art piece.

They will be using Ikea furniture for the performance, Australis nailpolish, with red split lentils supplied by ~-)8&~{[-=} of Smith Street, Fitzroy proceeds to Oxfam.

No lentils will be intentionally hurt during the performance.

The performance is rated PG. Jazz critics are warned that the performance is for entertainment purposes only.

No photography or recording devices will be permitted.

Anyone who turns up naked (with the sole exception of that gorgeous young dancer man from Dancing with the Stars) will certainly get their sausage sizzled, as this Big Arse has volunteered to help do the catering.

I once knew a woman who went to Confest (sic). She shared a charming Confest moment, when she had volunteered to help with the catering, the serving tables were quite low, just below waist height. She was forced, by fate, to request that one dreadlocked naked gentlemen move his bits out of the salad bowl, please.
