notes from the maestro's class at BMW Edge in Melbourne are now online at www.jazz.org.au please tell all your bass player mates who couldn't make the class. Also while you're on the site, if you haven't already registered now is the time. jazz.org.au is your online resource for musicians and anyone working in jazz. www.jazz.org.ausee if you can spot how many typos! We sadly don't have the luxury of great subs like Kenny :-( Kenny do you do Pro Bono?

I thought the john Patitucci Master Class was very good. He gave some good ideas - especially the ones on time. He was down to earth and inspirational.

Hi Rob, nice to see you here.
Can you summarise/paraphrase what Patituci said about time? Would be interested to know.

I haven't a huge amount of time to write in detail (will do so soon) but patitucci talked about the space in between beats. Understanding the fundamentals of playing in time i.e metronome on 2 &4. Trying to put the metronome on different beats 1 & 3. What I did find interesting was putting the metronome on one beat of the bar eg. beat 2. The whole bar is then 'opened up'. I have been working on and developing this simple idea by putting the beat on 1 and setting up rhythmic and harmonic parameters. Changing the tempos. Putting the beat to 2 then 3. Working on three over 4 and three over 2 and making the time strong through the bar. I have tried being rhythmically open and free in improvisation making sure that I am accurate with where the metronome beat is. His point was the the bigger the space the more freedom one has. I am going to try a beat over 2 bars and stretch the time a bit. For example - play behind the beat then see if I come out accurately. There are many parameters that can be applied. All this came to me from just a couple of sentences from John P. Workshops from great players are like that even though you have heard aal ot of it before - it can reinforce what you are doing and give new and simple ideas to practice.

The project worked well - the guitarists played great - Doug deVries played incredibly - one of my favorite moments was when he deveolped a line that went for 2 choruses - I have never heard Doug play like that. I would love to get some feedback on the gig as I was disappointed in the review as the concept of a mapping of the Melbourne 'Sound' was not mentioned. Jazz critics - thats another thread!

Rob I have copious notes from your gig too and have been planning to finish a major feature on Umbria and the Fringe but day job took over once again as I'm traveling which means work around the clock, and that kind of feature is at least a full day's work! After Mark's questioning you, I'm a bit nervous I'll have left something out! You men are scary! What's next, how many mms above the neck are his strngs? Aaargh! (*lol)

Okay - 1. I'm not into rugby but I do follow the Roos and no Wayne Carey will not be doing a masterclass.
2. I will be doing my best to support Australian jazz as a board member.
3. I think critiics are very important and the ones here in Australia are very supportive - I think there needs to be discussion on what should be make a a good 'jazz' critic. I would like to see more in depth anysis of the music. eg Australian musical identity just for starters. ( this could be big)
