heh heh
Anyway: Have just this week taken receipt of another album - to go with Quartet Out and Organisiimo - that I've been hipped to by participation on US jazz discussion boards.
In this case it's a little piece of big band heaven called Covergence Zone by Phil Kelly & The NW Prevailing Winds.
Phil posts under the pseudonym graypencil at JC and under his own name at AAJ.
Phil's a Bill Holman fan among other things, so this is just what you'd expect and enjoy - tasty, swinging, rocking, funkified big band juice a la the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis aggregation.
Yum yum pig's bum.
Got mine from CDBaby, baby!

Kenny you big hunk, there's a picture of me on my site. You can see for yourself. I am told I am very sexy, my agent thinks so, so does my girlfriend - my girlfriend plays on the West Brunswick womens Rugby team so you and she have a lot in common being rugby fans. Should I send you one of my cds, baby?

Should I send you one of my cds, baby? Er, actually I think I've got one at home which I've played once. Not my thing these days for a number of reasons. - hell, I hope I get my vibe back for singers and standards one day; I used to love it all so much. Anyway ... *Organissimo - Waiting For the Booglaloo Sisters. Groovy Michigan organ trio sounding beter and better; new album now in the making. *Jerome Sabbagh - North *Art Farmer - Sleeping Bee. This album with Red Mitchell and a bunch of Swedes is pretty cool but has one of those laughably awful early '70s jazz covers - you know, the ones with bad hair styles, too much facial hair and tacky shirts. *Phil Kelly & The NW Prevailing Winds - Convergence Zone

Ahhh, the old thread returns!
*Scott Tinkler Quartet - Live. Great Googly Moo! as the Cadillacs would have it.
*William Parker Quartet - O'neal's Porch

Kenny Weir your CD collection is so bloody good. I am really jealous. When you move to an adult community in your old age would you buy the place next to me, please? Would we be able to get someone to set up a trust fund for an OJF? An adult community near the sea. Great music, food, wine, magnificent library, net access, cute staff, surrounded by a divine organic garden. If Horowitz could play well, far into his 80s, then so can Isaacs, so we'll make space for live performance and get all our friends who are twenty years or more younger to come and entertain us every now and then. AJ can decide who comes to visit as he is one of the most diplomatic of the lot of us. I plan to live to 85 and die in my sleep but l if I lived somewhere like that I'd be happy to live forever, as long as my ears work.

Geez - what about the bar? And live big-screen Foxtel/ESPN? Grumble grumble ...
AJ gets to book my old folks home as well as everything else? Bloody hell ...

Hi Vicki, love Lorez Alexandria also, a wonderful singer. Originally out of Chicago, her musical family members were ministers and she sang spirituals in church. For me, her two Impulse albums 1. Lorez Alexander The Great (recently reissued thru Universal Music), should be able to order that locally and features the Wynton Kelly trio and more. Recorded in 1964 2. More of Alexandria The Great basically part 2 with a similar lineup. Its a shame she isn't more recognised, her phrasing and delivery are right up there with the best. apparently she was a warm and eloquant conversationalist. Its the way she tells a story in song. Catching lots of local music at the moment, singers Elana Stone, Mark Murphy here in the Illawarra, (did you catch him in Melbourne). The Bernie McGann Quartet next Friday at the UOW. Looks like singers this year at Wang. Also saddened to hear of the passing of NHOP the great danish bassist, only 58 I believe, at least I have a couple of great memories of him at the Basement to cherish .j. & v. mac

John and Vicki hello there! I sometimes forget you guys read this forum, oh dear what have I said lately! I was supposed to be in Sydney this week and if so I was going to call, but the Disgusting-Death-Virus-from-Hell has kept me at home for almost two weeks. I missed Cirque du Soleil too and some great live music. Oh my God, I didn't know about NHOP. Crikey that is so sad! He is way too young to be dead already. Shit. That is terrible. Such a brilliant talent. Unique. I am really sad about that. Speaking of great bass players, I went out tonight (by ambulance) to catch at least one of Murphy's gigs and Phil Stack was playing with him. Crikey I wish Stack would move to Victoria! Speaking of Victoria you two should come down for the 'Umbria' in Melbourne thing cos as well as that, there is an exciting fringe festival happening with all the musicians who should have been given paid gigs for the 'Umbria' thing. You know, you have a whole floor to yourself any time you wish and Melbourne always had great live jazz even if the City of Melbourne doesn't know that, we do!

nice stuff kenny - love the big johnny hodges blues with organ on New Orleans suite (fancy you may be a bit of a fan yourself...)
I'd quite happily enjoy that lot with you, but I might have to excuse myself for Fiona's record. Never really done it for me although I did used to enjoy going to hear Morgana years ago - that was a great band. What are all the rest of those folks up to now?

Art pepper + Eleven - Modern Jazz Classics.
Holy bovine but this is good. Not just a Pepper classic but a monument of west coast jazz, a genuine all-round masterpiece of jazz and a numinous testimony to the creative spirit. Mel Lewis and Joe Mondragon rock. Art sounds just plenty brilliant - woody and soulful, too - on clarinet. Yum yum pig's bum.
