Wynton's place in the world has been long debated, but I feel that nobody will really understand things properly until we're some way into the future. I don't let Wynton's opinions change the way I view his music. Just judge each performance as it comes.
It is unwise to forsake history for the sake of change, yet change is the only way we can understand history for what it was.

I think its also unwise to forsake change for the sake of history as WM seems to have done.

Spot on. One must balance the two. Know where you've come from to know where you're going.

Being a student of Phil's in sydney its really interesting to hear him talk about wynton's role (at the begining of his career) in adding to the vocalbulary of improvising musicians coming out of a jazz tradition... On the other hand i don't find myself terribly inspired by his music and even less by his political connatations... I think he is deserving of credit for his role on creating awareness of the music though...

It's tough to be an innovator. Maybe Wynton doesn't have it in him. Maybe he's destined to be regarded fairly highly as a player/composer but that's it...
Either way, I do dig a lot of his stuff. Some of his septet stuff is really good.

Maybe I should get Wynton to play my music then. I'm sure they'd play it better than my band.

I figure it this way: There's so much music going around that I can quite easily ignore Wynton. I find just everything he's done (that I've heard) too dry and, really, boring and contrived.
But I'm also happy to admit that my views of his music are co loured by my views of his views and attitudes. I don't think it's human to separate the two, really.
Besides: There's one youngish New Orleans-bred trumpeter who has already established a legacy - on record and otherwise (I've seen him live several times) - that I suspect will leave WM looking pale. Terence Blanchard. I don't love everything he's done, but everything he does is imbued with soul and intelligence.
WM gets the ink and all that goes with it; Blanchard makes music. Simple really.

Personally I'd prefer to hear Dave Douglas any day. Must admit though, Black Codes is a killer - I just haven't heard anything from Wynton since then that moves me.

Rainbow Theatre - Fantasy Of Horses. Melbourne '70s prog rock - pompous, bombastic twaddle. I know someone who will love it.
Road Work Ahead - On The Road Again. Southern California outfit - slick but soulful.
The Java Quartet - Deep Blue Sea. Brilliant.
The Brian VanArsdale Orchestra - The Flood. Heavy weather, baby!

Quick, lets find an obscure Yank album to throw in.
Oh, and some young Ausland cats.
Oooo, don't forget something old-school.
Am I alone in thinking it strange that the longest continuing thread on this board is about what people are listening to? Sad folk trying to out-hip each other with their latest "discovery", or perhaps it's some major player "re-discovering" so-and-so and then for a short while it's hip to listen to them, until the next new old thing comes along. Listen to whatever you're listening to, but stop thinking that your own listening is so much better than anybody elses. Who cares?
I'll tell you what I'm listening to - a bunch of sad wankers crapping on and on.

I'll tell you what I'm listening to - a bunch of sad wankers crapping on and on. Hey - you don't like it, bugger off. I always like reading about what are others are listening to. This fine thread is only diminished by sad wankers crapping on and on about what they consider to be the crapping on and on of others.
