Nearly finished the main section of my collection. Today I finished my last Cannonball album, only one to go now before I go to the secondary filing system - all those CDs stacked on my stereo that don't fit into CD drawers, such as box sets (calm down Bodgey), digi-paks and double-CDs. After that, vinyl, then, Lady McG's collection.
Back to Cannonball for a moment, let me just sing the praises of a relatively unsung drummer, Roy McCurdy. What a groove. A guy who has a great (and dare I say individual without a thesis on it) sense of when to play unison rhythms with the rest of the band, and when to play off the others.
Unfortunately, some of the best Cannonball recordings are ruined by shocking sound, such as the hideous, flatulant bass sound on Country Preacher.

gotta agree with you Alimcg some of the prodcution on earlier recordings is real hard to take now in 2007.....sometimes i cant stand it ........... on pre-1950s stuff sometimes I cant handle it at all now.....but there are days when i can get past it,,,,,,,,, depends ont he recording........and amount of alcohol consumend........but those Adderely men they did some awesome work...... my first audio device was a mono portable record player where i spun my 45 rpm vinyl singles but man that was a long long time ago......i wish i s till had it.......be intersting to listen to it now and check out how the sound really was

get over it, the music should win through, if not, fuck it.

Surely guts, tone production is a vital element of music. If not, why don't we all just play the same instrument?

yeah, tone production, but not recording quality. Lois sounds amazing on those shit recordings from last century, truthfully he would sound very different than that live, but the music wins through.
I do understand that it's nice to have an amazing recorded sound but some of the most amazing music I've heard on tape has been less than reasonable quality, but again it's the music that gets you past that.

The album I mentioned suffers not from recording problems, but from the bass actually being poorly amplified on stage. I agree with you when it comes to recording quality - nice, but not essential. I guess we've just misunderstood each other - maybe I should've been more specific in the first place.

1977?!! Better learn some tradition, man. How about Monteverdi's Marian vespers (1610), or Guillaume Du Fay's Mass for St Anthony of Padua, or, hang it, the Epitaph of Seikilos?
Gee, these guys who won't acquaint themselves with the forefathers...
