Was transferring a certain record to CD the other day and came across this autobiographical composition by a certain U.S. singer, the only clues are : 1. this person has visited these shores. 2. the words to the song - a blues.
I was born in Detroit, Michigan on Mickey Mouses' birthday, Nov 18, 1928. but my mother was only 16 years old so she couldn't raise me. So she sent me to live with my grandparents near a small coal mining town in Penn. state. Grew up with up with the coalminers singing in the beer garden every saturday night. Moved back to Detroit when I was about 13, grew up with Tommy Flanagan, Barry Harris and Kenny Burrell and we used to hang out at the club Sudan, that was everybody's scene. We were always chasin' Charlie Parker, I think he even wrote that song for us..'Chasin the Bird'.. where he played at the club where you had to be old enough to get in, well I used to forge my mother's birth certificate and wear a hat with a veil and dyed my hair real blonde and wore my high heeled shoes that killed my feet. But the man who owned the club wouldn't let us in, so we went back in the alley sittin' on the garbage cans, Bird knew we were there and he opened up the door and played for us, oh what a treat, oh what a treat, oh what a treat for a 15 year old girl who loved jazz.... Kenny Barron solo follows. Any ideas.

Sheila's Blues by Sheila Jordan
Have you heard her ‘Confirmation?’<br> Some times I wonder where my life would be If I never heard the music of Bird back when I was just a kid! I listened to each precious note blowing to of his horn so many years ago what a treat it was to hear him the thrill of being near him I listened to each precious note that he played with his heart Bird brought a special world to me by leading the way I learned to live my life by the dues that he paid he turned me on to sounds I never heard before by putting all those magical notes into every single phrase some times I find it rather strange knowing that their are those of us who really love him but so many aren’t even aware of his name I profess that I grew up surrounded by all the wonderful music he played with his horn there is nothing in life that will ever have a meaning for me or give me a thrill like hearing Charlie Parker play
****
at least that is how I remember the words - haven't heard her sing it for ages. I know the words fairly well as I had to do it for a class many years ago,
funny you should bring this up J/V cos the other day I was singing the above in the shower and thinking how, if you were brought up in the 70s in Melbourne, you could sing the same song about Lyall.
A great, great musician that so many under 35 don't know, at least he's still here. Cant wait for Wang can you? Hey were your ears burning? Mike was talking about you guys a week ago!

fair go, Sheila's hardly a millionaire, & she's contributed a whole lot more to music than Bird tributes.
She sings about him cos he & his music were part of her life ; she lived it, so she sings about it. Isn't that the way jazz should be ?

Hey VHB, not bad for a punter/muso. We know you are a fan of Sheila Jordan, good to see a few others appreciate her as well. We asked Mike to say g'day if he saw you. Wang is looking good for this year (when isn't it). Sheila's Blues comes from The Crossing on Blackhawk Records, she does a great take on It Never Entered My Mind also. A.J. I might have to chase up the ECM disc with Steve Kuhn as he also did a trio album for Blackhawk which I like, live at the Village Vanguard with Ron Carter and Al Foster.

Hi John and Vicki, great to see you guys taking a more active part in this online bar.
I have a lot of SJs recordings but I don't listen to them much these days for some reason. You know how you go through phases with music? I'm in piano trio phase presently.
That recording by SJ, The Crossing, is one of my favourites. Some goss: Sheila didn't own a copy of that CD. When she was in Australia several years back (before Wang I think) I was talking to her at BL and she asked me to please burn her a copy!
Speaking of musicians who use their voices, Mark Murphy could well be here with the Four Brothers touring soon. That’s something I would like to hear live. (Is just Judy who doesn't like Mark?)
When MM was here in Melbourne he was producing Nichaud's latest CD, I heard a couple of tracks and they are really extra fab arrangements. Very different direction to anything Nichaud's done before, I think they might have a huge hit on their hands if people are open to the new Nichaud.
MM is back in Adelaide next month to produce another CD for an Aussie vocalist whose work I am not familiar with. He may even move to SA for a long while, that's the plan anyway.
I can’t believe that after ALL this live jazz in Melbourne that I can not wait for Wangaratta. I feel about Wang like I once felt about Xmas about 40 years ago! What is it about that place and festival that is so special? Perhaps it must be because daily life doesn't get in the way of listening to great music it certainly can’t be the cuisine!

Wang!!! That's always the first thing marked on our calendar each year! Much better than Xmas!
Yes, it is only Judy who doesn't like MM. We managed to see Mark twice, when he was in AUS. Accompanied by Jonathon, Felix and on one occasion Mike Nock, Mark really knocked us out this visit. Great to hear that he might reside here for a while.
Well, it's only 24 weeks till we meet in jazz heaven, how will I recognise you, God? Will you be holding up a sign, or will you only be visible to the true believers?
The other Vicki

Hey Vicki
Yes Wang is MUCH better than Xmas!
I have no idea how you recognise God especially when there are so many of them of this forum and most of them can't spell, for some reason.
Here's my five year old Lauren's favourite joke:
What do you do if you see a Space man?
. , , , , , , , Park in it, man!
she thinks it is very funny.
xxx
see you in 23 weeks and counting!
