Why is it that people like 'guest' and Mr Purple don't want to put their name to their opinions?
If you really believe what you say, why can't you do it openly? Are you worried about getting blacklisted? Is that what it is? (I am sounding naive? Yes!)
Someone was unkind about the mixing on ABC jazz recordings the other day too, but personally I think it's not really fair to point the finger if you don't really have the courage of your convictions.
If the ABC wasn't there things would be much worse for jazz musicians. Count your blessings once in a while, please.
Sorry to lecture but I feel strongly about this!

i dunno, its easy to get despondant though...it seems people/musicans such as Gideon Brazil, Ronny Farella, Steve mag, Eugene Ball etc are the only one willing to put thermselves and their money on the line to create new opportunities for jazz players in oz today (at half bent and lebowskis repsectively)...this shouldnt really be up to them..its very sad...no one is properly giving jazz the push it needs..
the ceiling is so fucking low in this country your head gets bruised

Hello !
Yes, of course I'm worried about consequences of putting my name to these kind of remarks. Business isnt easy but I dont need to make it any worse for myself. Thought that would be obvious.
Wanted to illuminate the facts, the sad facts to someone who wondered how newmarket did it from someone who has firsthand experience. I still have to deal with newmarket till I find something better.
The point really isn't if my name is attached to my post.

Okay,
i have had CDs released by Larrikin, Newmarket and Jazzhead.
Jazzhead is way ahead IMHO.
They get really good publicity for the CD. My last CD Wide eyed was reveiwed over 20 times, was played all over the country. Jazzhead organised me to play live on 3L0 and festivals (Speigeltent in Melb, Syd, Adel) ect. I was pretty happy with the what happened with the release. For me it's not about money its about getting good exposure of the release and Jazzhead does that. Jamie Oehlers, Sam Keevers ect are releasing through Jazzhead. My newest CD has been totally paid for by Jazzhead - recording, mixing, mastering (in Japan) and pressing. They are now helping me relase the CD with quite a comprehensive strategy. Now thats a pretty good support.

I'm planning to come back to Melbourne and live. Don't want to come back to be buried. And I'm thinking jazz musician still - so be forewarned if you need a bass player i know plenty of good ones and I'll be back mid October - ring me and I'll pass on their numbers. But I'm thinking i should do something else.. a jazz magazine, a club, a record label.. there are so many opportunities in jazz. ps. listened to marks fool on the hill 5 times now and it's still beautiful.

Bored: are you always this mean? I don't think Rob is employed in his capacity as a non-fiction writer. This is an online forum, for goodness sake – hopefully you were just teasing.

Rob, love, how did you get to work in a university when your written expression is so shithouse? 'Bored'- If want to have a go - show your identity and don't be a wimp. I am just writing as quickly as possible - it's not a thesis. And by the way writing something constructive could help!

got to say i tried jazzhead 5 years ago. Joe listened and had time to talk to me. Though they didn't end up releasing my recording I appreciated the feedback and them actually saying "not for us". The other labels discussed here.. well lets just say I'm still waiting for one prominent particular label in Melbourne to get back to me once he checks with his partners. I ended up releasing the album myself.. and I got rid of them all - was only a run of 500. Check out cdbaby if you are considering releasing your own CD. Things like a bar code, electronic distribution, an on line presence to sell your ware and much discussion between members and founder about how to go independently ( Derek Silver ) is available for a jazz musicians budget. www.cdbaby.comI hold them in high regard and thoroughly recommend them to anyone that will go it alone with a recording. Another really interesting site for doing it a little differently is artist share. check out their site for a whole new concept on selling your product. www.artistshare.com

Why did people dismiss what Vicki was saying about ecommerce so quickly? Thats the key for emerging jazz musicians. Having distributed jazz cds, I know how reluctant retail is to stocking them, there's really not much labels nor distributers can do unless you have a decent profile and even then its difficult. Hoping that just by doing a deal with a label or distributor will see them stocking up shops like majors do for pop artists is dreaming nor would you want them to. I'm afraid its about DIY, ie selling CDs at gigs and on the internet and slowly building up a fan base. If you do have a profile, try to hook up with Jazzhead.
