i've been away for a little, so I'd like to respond to a couple of things in the thread.
Vicki, you asked how I can make comments without placing my name to them. It's a valid question; from time to time I post on the board using my real name, but I generally prefer to hide behind a pseudonym for fear of being misconstrued and causing offence.
Any of the stuff I post on the forum I discuss freely with other musicians in person, when I feel safe that I'm not going to be misunderstood. Our collective skills in e-communication are still so poor that confusion can be rife, and I don't wan't anything I post here to be taken out of context and relayed via gossip only to turn into some stupid rift. Anyone who knows me personally knows that I rarely lack courage in my convictions...
right, what was next?
oh yeah, ABC production. Okay, my PERSONAL OPINION that I don't expect anyone else to share is that the recordings from the Melbourne jazztrack studio tend to be reverb-laden, with the rhythm section sounding distant and disconnected from the horns. Now I know that's a sound which is great for many people, but personally I hate it. I find it mannered and polite.
oh, and one other thing, yes it sounds like rob's experience with Jazzhead has been fantastic, and if you are playing music which fits into their roster, fine. I gather Belinda's music is too way out for them, which doesn't bode too well in my opinion.
Yes, Newmarket's ability to stay in the jazz business has been paid for by musicians as they have been essentially just a distribution company, but that has enabled them to support a much broader range of music (I believe) than the other labels we are discussing, music which many of the others wouldn't go near. I know many musicians who have been fortunate to record at the ABC but unable to afford the fee to be able to release it themselves when the ABC passed on it.
So it's hard, and I fully agree with Vicki's comments about going fully independent and using innovative marketing. If only all we had to do with our time was to devise marketing straegies (that's not a dig at you V, just a wish for more hours in the day and less rent and bills to pay!)
