I've just read an interesting discussion at Jazz Corner about small (ie smaller than the likes of Amazon etc) online CD retailers. www.cdbaby.com is central to the discussion, but others are discussed as well. (Because of the Jazz Corner setup, I can't link you to the relevant thread, but you can find it by going to the Speak Out section at www.jazzcorner.com/speakeasy/ ) I haven't bought any discs from cdbaby myself, but the remarks of various musicians and punters make it sound like a big winner for all concerned. Then, out of curiosity, I searched for the word "Australia" at cdbaby - and was surprised by the results. I got 189 hits. There was a lot of classical, folk, Aboriginal and world/various sounds. And there were artist such as Bluebottle Kiss, Geoff Achison, Quill & Tolhurst, Ross Wilson, Keith Glass and Mick Hamilton (a lot) and John Kennedy. BUT NOT ONE JAZZ PERFORMER OR ALBUM! What's going on here? Does the Australian jazz community simply not know about these possibilities, avenues, opportunities? (Keith Glass is a good mate of mine, so I'm gonna ask him about what sort of sales he generates through cdbaby. I'll get back to you ...) From a quick read of the guidelines, it seems cdbaby restricts itself to albums it gets straight from the artists. But it seems that releases on Newmarket, for instance, would qualify. And certainly self-produced, self-released albums - Gai Bryant's Music, for instance - would qualify. Any comments or stories?
