I too am very confused as to how you can judge an award for best album on 30 seconds of presumably one track, bit like awarding movies on the basis of the previews...! BUT I also fail to see how the genre of music makes any difference - most jazz records are more likely to be essentially the same from beginning to end than a pop release.
Pop records often sound the same AS each other, they're SUPPOSED to, that's what defines the current fashion. BUT grabbing 30 seconds from some filler track/remix at the back end of a record is a far cry from hearing the big chorus of the killer single.

speaking of Arias and awards and music. i have tried really hard but I just can't get into Grabowsky's music. It always sounds just boring it doesn't move me it never makes me feel uplifted I don't want to dance to it and it doesn't feel like it swings much to me . I dont know why he is so revered. I have seen him live loads of times live and keep trying to get into it but always feel bored his music feels cold to me. What is wrong with me? If so many people love him why can't I connect? I love all kinds of music I could give you a list of all the stuff I love but he isnt among it Also I don't agree that Katie Noona is a jazz diva she's really bland. I saw her at wangaratta and alsmot fell alseep.
Is it me or them?

Theres a lot of people in the jazz scene that find grabbers a bit inacessable and dull.

com'on now, Paul is one of the top pianists to come out of this country. He has a totally recognisable touch on the instrument, which is no mean feat on what is a very hard to affect instrument. He is increadably prolific and does have his own writting style. He has acheived great things career wise recording and playing with many of the worlds greats. As for dull, on what level? Have you heard him play?? I can understand that you cant please all the people all the time but hes hardly dull. From the wizards, his trio, tinklers various qtets (esp the recent) maybe inaccessable for the uneducated but hardly dull. The people at the top will allways have their critics but lets still give credit where its due.

please enlighten us then as to what you find excitng on the Australian scene? Maybe you could even let us know what it is lacking that makes PG 'dull'. Harmony, rhythm, texture, form, ?? Lets at least try to act like we have some idea.

Dear Question,
Why are you so perplexed? For goodness sake no one llikes everything. It's just not your cup of tea, so no need to be worried about it. Do you really expect that anyone explain exactly how to enjoy music to you?
Why he is so well respected, that is another matter entirely. If you can't work that one out on your own I don't think anyone here can help you.
Is this a hoax post anyway? Who are you? Come out of that closet!

hey, I'm with Question. Mind you i don't get into a bunch of the piano players that get promoted in australia when I reckon there are others more deserving. I find a lot of Grabowsky's music either bloated or twee, and I think his profile is the result of an extended period on telly as the straight man to Steve Vizard...!
Some of his soundtrack work I enjoy (Last Days of Chez Nous), but i think cold is the key word. Mind you, that seems to be what a lot of people seem to like to listen to, so whaddayagunnado? I think it comes from a desperate avoidance of anything that might cause offence.
Oh, and critic, if you want specifics I believe they were all in the first post: lack of warmth, lack of swing, lack of excitement

on the subject of piano players-
check out Will Poskitt- he is an amazing pianist, and some say the best kept secret in Melbourne. He has one of the best touches on the piano I have EVER heard and his improv and comping will constantly surprise you. Not only a jazz pianist, but an accomplished classical player as well. He makes any piano sound amazing- he could even make the piano at Dizzy's sound good.

His harmonic, rhythmic and language content is at such a high level. What is subjective is whether his playing musically "moves" you - his playing of the piano is just great!! Personally I dig his playing and by the way he does swing - why would he use Alan Browne in his band for so long if he wasn't into swinging. Remember - when they are talking about you - you're doing okay!

i'm with critic and rob and i like you too critic but who are you? as for grabbers, his output is so diverse, he's so hard to pigeon hole i find it hard to accept sweeping statements and lazy adjectives like 'cold' when applied to his music.
