We three travelled north to hear Mark's trio at the Side - On last week, we followed a particularly nasty thunderstorm for about an hour through heavy fog. It was well worth the effort. A night of standards from three totally in sync musicians. Their take on Chick Corea's 500 Miles High was a knockout. Felix and Ben are great musicians. A wonderful listening crowd made it all the more memorable. The trip home flew by with reminiscents of the night. Hi to Vicki and Bev
Also to Mr K. Weir, we were lucky enough to be at the Bridge Theatre, Coniston (Wollongong) for the Mike Nock Big Small Band recording which is now out on ABCJazz, it was a memorable night, as you can hear. Keep up the good work with promoting Australian Jazz to the world. We think our muso's are on par with the rest of the world. Ingrid Jensen remarked at her Side On gig how impressed she was with our players. Over the past 12 WJF's we have come to the realisation that our most memorable moments at Wangaratta come from our musicians.

Ditto for my experiences at Wangaratta. To a certain extent that is dictated by numbers, with the Australian performers outnumbering the international by about 10 to 1. But even taking that into account, the strongest performances for me are invariably, but not exclusively, by the locals.
I disagree with you strongly about Australian performers being "on par with the rest of the world". On the evidence I get to hear these days (not exactly conclusive, I'll admit!), tha Australians are far superior.
