Just in case some of you didn't know. The Vic. state government has slashed 70% of the budget for Melbourne Youth Music - which has run programs for both classical and stage band players with some 30000 musicians having taken part during its illustrious history(including Tiger and other jazz and classical players of note). I guess some of us would not be so upset if the funding were to be directed toward some more support for other music in this town but it looks like they are just emptying the chests to support the upcoming games..... At the same time, it looks as if any special status for the specialist music schools in Vic. ie Blackburn High etc is going to be scrapped with what little funds there are being distributed around the state- musical excellence in State schools is now more endangered than an alto player with a stripey suit. They have also closed down the State Music Library...You can email <lynne.kosky@parliament.vic.gov.au> and give Bracks and co. a rev..
