Wondering if you all are following the depressing anti arts exchanges currently appearing on the opinion pages of The Australian?

The Australian What would you expect from that rag ? One thing Mark Latham got right : "Janet Albrechtsen is a skanky ho who would die in a ditch defending the Howard government."

Like a good few others, there was a time when I had big hopes for Mark Latham - but this comment I have always found appalling. Why couldn't he just say she was an unreconstructed right-wing ideologue? The man who used 'arse-licker' to condemn servility to the United States adopts an American vernacular to criticise a woman with insinuating condemnation of her sexual morals and her personal hygiene - things about which I doubt he has any real idea, and things that are irrelevant. Why is it that blokes always feel they can do this? Why should it be repeated here? Furthermore, why should Albrechtsen carry the can for The Australian newspaper as a whole? If you want to know how bad the situation is, read this morning's editorial. She is not working alone.

Oh, by no means is she alone ; she typifies how outrageously biassed the entire publication and its so-called 'opinion' columnists are.
As for Latham's comment : appalling language, yes, but he was absolutely right.

As with most bands, I reckon Elitist Watermelons pretty much lost the plot after their second album.

ps : don't get me started on andrew bolt !!!!!!!! Yeah, well, me neither. And I'm no fan of Janet Albrechtsen - in fact it's probably better once you know what's going on to avoid these reactionaries altogether. But I can't agree that Latham was in any way right to insult her in the terms in which he did. I think it was putrid.

Latham can't be a well man, I think he has been unwell for a long time.
Janet Albrechtsen is a remarkably odd woman. She reminds me of the members of the weird cult of Thatcher worshippers in the UK.
It is amazing how comfortable society is attacking women by way of degradation. Men are not alone in doing this. I remember Germaine Greer attacking another female columnist in the same UK newspaper not so long ago, describing her as having "Bird's nest hair... and wearing fuck me shoes". Astonishing that someone like Greer would resort to that kind of insult in print. It was quite a big story and sad that a thinker like Greer is also so conditioned that she resorts to that kind of insult.
Errol Simper (my personal hero), Phil Adams, Emma Tom are great writers on Murdoch’s payroll if you are looking for a little balance!

great writers - great thinkers.. I think all of this needs to be redefined since Howard Gardner introduced us to multiple intelligence - Phil Adams is a good bloke but he keeps his musical intelligence somewhere near his colon.....

It's odd that some intellgient people in the world don't have a passion for great music. I have three close friends - all writers - who hate contemporary jazz as passionatley as I love it. They don't understand my obsession with the art form and why they want to listen to Madonna and Neil Dimaond is beyond me. Worse still, they force that music on their poor children.

I just read Latham's diaries and he reckons he was put up to it by a mate and didn't really know what it meant... not really plausible. Albrechtson is the thinking woman's Pauline Hanson - a truly frightening little creep. The problem with Latham's comment is not that it was insulting - she deserves it - but that it wasn't funny. Anyway that's my take. And, on the other side of the political divide, I'm suprised Vicki that you're suprised at anything Germaine Greer says... she's just as mad as Albrechtson. Maybe once upon a time she was a thinker but now?? I think she's just a polemical attention seeker not unlike the said Skanky Ho.
