Have we covered this? I see that the National Jazz Awards are for piano again this year. I'm too old by a week to enter! What a tremendous relief.

With so many righteous Jazz piano players from Sydney to choose from? Nah. But look, I'll wait by the phone anyway.

Hey aj, what exactly do you mean by:
this must be recorded on an audio format (not a CD-ROM / data format),
Also, what is a ballad exactly, or a blues for that matter. (these are serious questions)

being a luddite, I'm just going on what the folks who copy the cds for me said : it's to do with making it easy to copy the entries onto a master disc. (eg, if your 3 tracks go for 15 minutes, it's formatted so that 3 tracks totalling 15 mins can be recognised & copied)...............does that make sense ?
Otherwise, when you copy the entry disc, it doesn't stop at the end of the 3rd track, just continues for another 40 mins or so to the end of the cd.
'ballad' & 'blues' ? without being flippant, I'd say it's in the ear of the behearer.
I'd rather not aim for a watertight description. eg I could say a blues has to be in the 12-bar format, then someone could say 'but what about so-and-so who recorded a blues with a structure of 12 bars then 14 bars' etc etc.
Let's just say that if you think it's a ballad (or blues), go ahead & do it. It's just that if you do 'Giant Steps' as fast as possible & say that's a ballad, chances are the judges will disagree.
On the other hand, you might play something not usually treated as a ballad (eg Giant Steps) ; the point is to display your concept, what you can do, etc, at a slow tempo.
Likewise, the point of having a blues is to show what you can do in what is probably the most basic & commonly-used format ; it gives the judges some chance of comparing apples with apples, so to speak.
