I was there (for most of it, anyway). There was a lot of terrific playing, and beautiful dynamics & sympathy in the band, but I couldn't get away from a feeling that the material didn't offer enough for these musicians. Call me a snob if you like, although I don't think that's it; the tunes seemed threadbare compared with the capacities of the improvisers and it was this imbalance that troubled me. Without their lyrics so many pop tunes seem to lose their bite, and I'm of a generation that's never known most of these songs anyway, so I couldn't even recall the lyrics in their absence. I felt too strongly the lack of a referent, which I don't think one should do. I did think the trio was working superbly together, though, and there were many moments of tremendous unity. Some of the outros were really wonderful (which is interesting in itself, that they stood out), and the focus within the band was consistently evident.
These are my personal thoughts and intended to be prescriptive for NO-ONE. As ever, it would be best if everyone heard the music so they could exchange their views, particularly if they differ from mine.

Tend to agree with Tim.............I thought there was a lot more energy in the live performances than on the cd.

i was thinking bout lyrics & instrumental versions 2day . some1 askd somwhere here bout musicans keeping lyrics in their head when they play. ive heard loads of ppl talk about this like its real important cos the meaning of the tune is big part of it @ the same time heaps of 'standards' r instrumentals thatve gto some1 elses lyrics 2 them so which version do u do use as a musicain? keep the title in ur head maybe? then its like so totally open 2 interpretation, which is the idea anyway! when a songwriter writes a tune & lyrics that is stil open 2 interpration. kinda like this forum like ive noticed loads of ppl reading stuff in2 posts points that rnt there in the1st place! dead annoying sometimes & real funny other times. yeah the world is totally intrsting @ the mo.

Is there a website for the fringe yet? My country guests from interstate who are coming to town (without their cows) need more information, please.
Speaking of cows, Belinda Moody wrote a great musical piece about cows coming home. Is Belinda doing the fringe?

John K, you might think of it as the lyrics give you another point of inspiration/ lead / direction. i think it's a matter of the more information you have, the more choices you give yourself to make something up. Knowing the lyrics could only be helpful in my opinion.
