This thread has gotten crazy hot and heavy the last couple of days...I'm not saying I didn't laugh out loud, smack the table top and then wonder about the wider issues of privacy, blah,blah...
But I'm wanting to get into something a bit slinkier and talk about what everyone does when they sit down with their instrument....practice, woodsheddin, meditation, playing...whatever you want to call it...I'd love to know what your current routine is.
I'm hopelessly ubstructured with practice, and I get the weird shaky fears at times - it's useless I know, but that's what happens..and I find myself wishing I could peep into the practice time of some other musos, to see what their worlds look like...
Right now, my hubbby reminds me of a keith jarrett type practicer...he locks himself away and plays and plays without stopping for a couple of hours...focused bastard!

Hey Kimba - this is something I'm really into, developing an effective practice routine. I'm about halfway through writing a book (well not so much a book as a short treatise [is that the right term?]) on that subject. I split my practice into 3 parts now, 1st being the technical aspects of playing like sound development, intervallic studies, articulation, scale and arpeggio practice and from there on the bulk of my practice is (part 2) Melodic and Harmonic material (scale incorporation, melodic development, substitutions etc) and (part 3) Rhythmic and Phrasing material (short phrasing, soloing using only triplets etc, rhythmic displacement, polyrhythms etc etc...) I do all of this on a tune that I'm working on in multiple keys and time signatures......Then I try and forget it all and go to the gig!

One important thing, I recall from my days of playing live music, was to try not to build up the practice in your head to the most important thing in the day thereby making it a much bigger chore and scarier than it need be.

Thats a good point Vicki - 2 pieces of advice I've been given that have stuck with me in regard to this... practice without attachment to results on the days when you don't want to practice, get out the horn and do it anyway
