I just wanted to thank everybody who has been so supportive and understanding of my over-reactions to the dizzies postings.
I've received some very nice emails, private messages and also appreciate very much the really thoughtful public postings.
I am feeling much better. I need to apologise once again for the outings, but also for my negativity about elements within the Melbourne community that steered too close to generalisation (though they were not intended as such) and also for whinging about audience numbers which nobody should take personally as I know you are all fighting the same battles and that work and family committments (and financial considerations) don't allow us to always support gigs we might have otherwise.
Just to be positive for a minute I was reflecting that Melbourne has really been my second musical home made possible by my performances 1-2 times a year at Bennetts since 1993 and also the Sydney performances that I have been able to arrange involving my collaborations with Melbourne players.
Through this I have had the privilege of performing with wonderful musicians such as Paul Grabowsky, Joe Chindamo, Ben Robertson, Dave Beck, Gary Costello, Shelley Scown, Ian Chaplin and Danny Fischer. I've had the pleasure to work with the people who work hard for the scene like Martin Jackson, Adrian Jackson, Megan Evans, Michael Tortoni, Mal Stanley and Gerry Koster. I've really enjoyed making friends through this Board with other tireless workers for the scene like Kenny Weir and Vicki Horne Bonet. And last but not least I have the support of a dedicated Melbourne-based record label in Vorticity. So I really should be counting my Melbourne blessings and I am.
I've stayed in the same hotel in Melbourne every time (opposite the Church on Lonsdale) and have eaten in the same pho noodle house. I'm a bit of a creature of habit and these things help one feel at home.
I was considering moving to Melbourne at one point.
So my whining is like that of one who lets fly because he feels at home, you know, a kind of family brawl (even though I am technically a temporary ring-in to the Melbourne scene).
What I was going to say was that it does seem to be impractical to bring a Sydney trio to Melbourne given audience numbers, but as before maybe I will have a chance to try some new collaborations with Melbourne players and singers which has the dual advantage of taking off the box office pressure but most importantly allowing for new experiences.
I am locking off this thread because I am not fishing for reciprocal tributes.
