Ohwows impending depression got me thinking that there may well be some younger viewers logging on to this site (no..not you scrota)who are in a state of some apprehension as to whose hands the music rests in right now. The last week on this site has revealed a dark and oily underside to this world , a world of harsh and sometimes unreasonable criticism ,betrayal and in the worst cases slander and abuse.
For those of us who give energy to teaching and mentoring, where we may be working to instill a sense of wonder and adventure in young musicians, this all seems rather damaging.
No one said this was an easy path.Even for those blessed with great talent is proves difficult. The history of music is not populated by smiling ,contented and omniscient beings. It is the domain of people - some of whom are OK specimens and a fair few who clearly are not. Take Wagner.....what a wanker! Buddy Bolden -had some serious issues- Bird-chronic self destructive tendencies - even Miles let his humanity off the hook now and then ....mainly because this way of life is only fuelled from the passion within...and that can be flawed - as people generally are. Tinkys synopsis of his own life(which one you may ask?) on another thread explains it pretty well.
To be serious about this music means having some humour! And we have established that it can get dark in this part of the world.Koestler cites humour as a primary Act of Creation in his book of the same name.Having strong ideas and running with them - the whole act of creating music seems politically subversive these days...
So when you witness mature adults having a bit of a go at each other in what seems a rather juvenile and obnoxious fashion here - at least at times , its funny, and at times informative and beats the hell out of listening to Parliament on the radio....
