Its still so great to hear players around here who are really adept at both - because they have to be..who retain their own convictions about the music and bring it to whatever they play l mean if you are influenced by contemporary jazz/free music whatever it is going to come out in yr playing whether your playing standards, louis armstrong or whatever...l think the really good players play like this, it's not like "l put on this this hat for this band and the other for the other bands..." These two statements say the same thing dont they Will?

Not sure about that actually. One of my favorite players anywhere is Carl Dewhurst. He is truely an amazing improviser in all styles. The thing with him is though that he really does play each style. Whether its blues, punk, fusion, free, he plays as though thats all hes ever played. The thing is too he always sounds honest, never like hes just learnt the notes but understands the true depth of each style. Now while this sort of agrees with your statement the problem is he doesnt sound the same in each style, well not really. He sounds like the same person I guess but his approach does change dramatically. He does sound like he wears different hats but they all fit him!

And he always looks different too. Fucking overgrown chameleon. When I was younger at college up your way scott, I;d visit sydney every 4 months and wonder who the guitarist was at the gig each time. and yes I agree, he sounds different in different settings, it must be something in his nature. would love to see him down here again.

I'd like to think one can wear whatever hat they feel like on whatever occasion. I see this as versatility, not a compromise of their art. It doesn't mean they always have to change hats, but if one is a great player, is it not at the player's discretion to know when it's appropriate?

He does sound like he wears different hats but they all fit him! don't know why but this is something I wasn't going to get into the other day ( doing what I was critisizing others for doing! 10 hail marys ), woosing out... I'm not saying this directly about Carl, firstly I don't know his music so well and the things I've heard ( most of em anyway ) l like, but lots of these very 'profficiant' players can do it all, no problem but rarely sound like themselves, they can do 'both', tenths, all! but for me it gets back to the other discussion about standards etc, don't really want to get into that again but there is certainly something to be said for incredible proficiency, skill and knowledge of the history etc, not necessarily resulting in interesting music, well played music sure, very professional, but not really interesting,...! and yeah yeah, before you all wet your panties, there is the opposite of course too, where people don't know their shit at all...

Will I totally agree, I think Carl is actually an odd one out because he is one of the most creative improvisers around. There really is not many that can do it like he does. I used to feel limited bacause I can only really play the way I play and can't wear the hats, but now it makes me feel liberated. I think this is where the hours of self exploration ( no not wanking) have paid off, you just don't get that only playing standards!

A recent comment was made by Greg Osby that he thought there didn't appear to be a very large creative music scene in Aus. I guess its hard to expect any scene in a country this size to be large, and I really don't care what a the opinion is of someone who I find to have little creativity in their music, but, I'm curious as to what people round here think is creativity in music. It depends upon where one is looking doesn’t it? If one frequents the concert halls and theatres, creative music of any sort can not afford to be too innovative – otherwise the crowds will not come (unless one has the advantage of having an established name to go with the innovation of course!). But if one were looking in the back streets cafes and bohemian eateries, there is innovation galore. I guess the gentleman in question hadn’t heard of Mark Sholtez just yet either lol I believe creative music is pushing the boundaries; outlining the unexpected. Saw a marvellous gig in Brisbane Powerhouse of Toplogy featuring Tyrone Noonan (george) recently. Incredible. It had plenty of popular tunes that had been rehashed into nu-expressionism forms. Best rendition Ive ever heard of Satisfaction!

Danger Mouse, now we're talking, what a brave little rodent. Unlike Johnny who's just a little rodent.
