Hi Folks.
Antboy got me thinking when he was writing about the scene (or lack thereof) in Nantes (who are you antboy? yes, I'm sure everyone else knows but I'm a schmuck). I'm currently in Berlin, having lived in Melbs for the last two years, originally coming from Tassie. I'm very attatched to Melbourne and the scene there, and had some great times, played some great music and met lots of incredibly creative musos with a hell of a lot of energy and passion. Things like the Jazz Fringe Fest and Half Bent really are where it's at for me - the community spirit and the realisation that we are all in it for the music (look out, I'm starting to talk TreeHug....where's cartman when you need him??! ;D) Seriously, I'm really glad things like these festivals (I know these bigger events are only the tip of the ice berg) exist, as opposed to just waiting around for 'every schmo on the touring circuit' (thanks Tam).
It's interesting for me at the moment, having to get to know another scene and how it works. Coming from Tas (where the scene is so small it would fit under a small rock ) where I did my U/Grad and regular gigs etc Melbourne was and is amazing, especially, as has been noted by many, considering the political, economic and social climate lead by His Great Fuckstickness, Mr.Sheen. I'm agree with Tinky - I'm glad there are so many musos and ensembles into their own thing. Don't get me wrong, and those of you that know me will know that I'm not adverse to 'standards' (terrible word), but I think that Aus' isolation, youthfulness and ability to take the piss are cards we can all play.
What I'm trying to say (and rambling...apologies) is that I would like to hear other people's rants about Aus vs. the rest of the world musically speaking.
Ok. Apologies for crapping on - congrats if you made it through that crap. Thanks for reading. Try the veal, I'm here all week.
