I agree that isolation does foster (maybe a more rapid) artistic growth. I know when I was in my teens and living in Perth, I used to think EVERYBODY in Sydney and Melbourne were really heavy musicians, and in America, well even heavier. So I practiced my ass off and when I finally came across I realised that sure there were some great muso's, but there were also a lot who just sat on there asses all day stoned and watching Oprah....

All the musicians I really admire and enjoy listening to are very broad thinkers. They have a life that extends well beyond the wood shed. When you hear them speak (whether it's through their instrument or not) it's from a place of deep, heartfelt and maybe even bitter experience. In other words they are willing to be vulnerable and fragile, to be courageous and honest.
Wait, I'm getting to the point.
Your value as a musician (or person for that matter) has got nothing to do with where you come from and a lot more to do with how you got there in the first place - and not much to do with how much you practice, but why.

Just got home from the Byron Blues Fest and funnily enough was just pondering what makes some artist's more 'listenable' than others. It definately has to do with realm and depth of experience, like Juan De Marcos, MD of The Afro Cubans is a professor in mechanical engineering. And it's lifestyle that makes Cuban music so real and rhythmical. They're living it! Bias yes darling what are you doing posting comments in my UN , you diddent sat any thing about the increadable trupet playing i hope or the shit sound , immpeccable rhythm timming gusto and ka boomphp
