Here's a little more detail Website will be ready really soon...
Presented by: Lebowski’s, La Mama Musica, Half Bent, Make It Up Club, and Jazzhead Records 12th-21st May
The Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival was formed in 2005 to celebrate Melbourne’s burgeoning creative jazz scene. Building on the unprecedented success of that event we are once again ready to party with ten days and nights of original music featuring Melbourne’s most celebrated improvisers plus a couple of interstate guests. The 2006 Jazz Fringe Festival kicks off in Fed Square with a series of concerts including free outdoor events and the premiere of a new work by celebrated pianist and composer Jex Saarelaht, commissioned by the festival with the support of APRA. This concert will be presented at BMW Edge on Sunday 14th May and also features the ARIA nominated Jamie Oehlers/Sam Keevers Duo, and multi ARIA award winning pianist Andrea Keller with her quartet.
Following the BMW Edge concert will be a series of performances at venues including The Make It Club’s regular haunt, Bar Open in Fitzroy; Lebowski’s at Wesley Anne, Rechabite Hall, and 303 (all in Northcote); the Timeout Cafe in Federation Square; La Mama in Carlton, and the Czech Club in North Melbourne; these are all venues committed to nurturing Melbourne’s creative jazz scene. Come and hear some of the musicians that give Melbourne the right to claim to be the jazz capital of the southern hemisphere including: Adam Simmons Quartet, Murphy’s Law, Stephen Magnusson and Frank Di Sario’s Boundaries, Erik Griswold (USA/Bris), Big Fela, Allan Browne, Shannon Barnett, Phil Noy, Stephen Grant, Tim Pledger, Sean Baxter, Dave Brown, Geoff Hughes, Ronny Ferella, Tony Gorman (Syd), Julien Wilson, Zeno’s Wig, Anita Hustas, Kynan Robinson, Colin Hopkins, Peter Knight, Lucas Michailidis, Twelve Tone Diamonds, The Hoodangers, Eugene Ball, and more.
On Sunday the 21st of May the festival winds up with BIG ARSE SUNDAY… an afternoon and evening of wonderful strangeness, deep groove, dissonance, melody, cacophony and the beauty of song. From 2PM ‘til late at the Spanish Club in Fitzroy, listeners will kick back to artists including, Stephen Magnusson solo, Adrian Sherriff’s stunning Byar, the hard grooving Willow Neilson Quintet, Tim Pledger’s forays into unmapped territory with Bohjass Upas Militia, Ren Walters, and deep groove with the Andy Swann Group.

G'day shaggaz! Just a quick one, and this not meant as a slight, just my own curiosity:
How do you define jazz "fringe"?
I know it obviously disqualifies James Morrison, but are there guidelines for programming? I would have thought that most jazz in Australia qualifies as "fringe".

We're not so much trying to define "fringe jazz" the name refers to the fact that it started last year in response to the Umbria Jazz fiasco... "in the tradition of fringe festivals that take place alongside major festivals around the world" etc

Geez, this sounds grouse! Is grouse a Melbourne word? Was talking to my hairdresser - and she'd never heard the word grouse before. She is from Darwin... Anyhow, GO Jazz Fringers.
