First up, here's a tip: What is quite possibly Melbourne's best hamburger can be got at the ground floor cafe in the YWCA in Elizabeth St. Sure, it'll costya more than a Big Crap ($12), but it's all good - and the fries are hot and crunchy.
My query, though, is this: Is the integrity of a hamburger diminished, adulterated or compromised by the use of tinned beetroot and rocket (instead of iceberg lettuce)?
What say you?

I don't like tinned beetroot at all so am biased. Rocket is cool.
Since I can't go out and have one now (as I would if I lived in Melbourne) can you describe it in pornographic detail so I can savour it vicariously?
Crunchy chips are such a promising start.

Melbourne's best hamburgers are at Danny's in North Fitzroy... All afficianados including Crusty and Frankie D all agree....
If they put beetroot in a hamburger their nuts would be chucked in the dim sim steamer.....

Rocket is only cool when it's spelt "Roquette".

I would say in general a hamburger is diminished any time it's made by a kid in a paper hat earning $5/hr. Also I'd say if you're paying $12 for a burger you're getting screwed over.

I'd say if you're paying $12 for a burger you're getting screwed over. I don't think so - it seems like a good deal for what is a fairly substantial meal. I don't rate Danny's. I find their burgers pretty lame. In terms of old-style Oz burger shoppes, I prefer Andrew's in Albert Park. Mark: Given you're only ever here at the weekends, you're gonna be out of luck re the YWCA sandwich. Here it is: Lots of divine chips; beetroot, rocket, runny egg, cheese (melted on meat), good well-seasoned patty, a dab of onion chutney. It's one of those big ones. You could go the hands routine, but really it's a knife and fork job (and that, I suspect, would mean an automatic downgrade in some quarters).

They still do a genuinely great burger at the old truck-stop in Seymour.

I draw your attention to a recent article that featured in the Age's Epicure about Hamburgers. It stated that Danny's had 30 PER CENT more votage for their hamburgers than ANY OTHER place in Victoria.
This place is not the Boney M of hamburger joints. This is the real deal. In a nation satisfied with cultural and political mediocrity, its good to now that one can still get a great hamburger.
It's made with real love. One guy grills the buns, the other guy flips the beef and cracks the egg, another guy serves. -they're like a well tuned rhythm section that knows how to make singers and lame horn players sound good.
(and its open 'tll 2am)

I stand by my claim that $12 is a rip-off. Plenty of places where you can buy comparable burgers for under $10.

I think there is a split, though, between yer average greasy spoon $5 burger and something a little more hefty and classy.

And of course it's all subjective, which is why any given burger is likely to taste better post-midnight as opposed to, say, 5pm. And depending, too, on one's alcohol/recrerational drug consumption prior to dining.

Look... i've had a fair few of danny's burgers and the ONLY time they taste half decent are at 2 in the morning... But really, at that time, anything hot tastes pretty good.
They make good chips though. and you get lots of them.... mmmmmm...

In New Orleans there's a chain called Bud's Broiler. Real classy in a low-rent way. Their burgers don't have names - they have numbers!
