I was in Readings on Lygon street today looking at CDs and came across a new Mark Murphy release on Verve called "Once To Every Heart". This is absolutely BRILLIANT. I can't stress to you enough how beautiful this recording is...I think it could be the best thing I've ever heard Mark Murphy do. It's Mark singing (and plays piano on one track), Frank Chastenier on piano , Till Bronner on trumpet and flugel, and Christian Von Kaphengst on bass. The CD is all ballads, and there are some strings added as well... all players on this are tasty players...very melodic.
Mark Murphy is truly the MASTER at singing ballads- an amazing storyteller...

Off the subject a bit, but I figured all the vocalists will be checking out the post. Does anyone have the Billie Holiday album where she sings "Easy to Remember" and "What a little Moonlight"? It's not the Lady in Satin thing, and it might even have been live, I cant remember. Bobby Gebert gave me a tape of it about 15 years ago, and it was unbelievable, especially Easy to Remember. I've been trying to find it again for years, it would be early-mid Billie. Any ideas?

You don't miss the drums either on Once To Every Heart, my favourite Mark Murphy album since his Muse days. They were the ones that got me hooked on his sound. Two pieces have made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, one is I'm Glad There is You from his 1972 album Bridging a Gap on Muse and a live set at the Kiama Surf Club in 198? he sang Dindi. I am so happy he keeps touring out here even if it is unprofitable. 5 stars to Mark, Vicki is that ok.

Hey Jamie, although I don't want to confirm your generalisations , I know of a compilation available with those tracks on it. Don't know if they are the recordings you are talking about, but here it is on yahoo shopping: shopping.yahoo.com/p:Forever%20Gold:1921350315;_ylt=AvhJDwZ7M_qYL3JiSiegh4cbFt0A;_ylu=X3oDMTBic2hxMGNhBGx0AzQEc2VjA3Ny?clink=dmps/billie_holiday_easy_to_remember_what_a_little_moonlight/ctx=mid:2,pid:1921350315,pdid:2,pos:7,spc:14489115,date:20060416,srch:kw,x:

Hey Jamie getting off the subject again, I noticed you're bringing your quartet to Wollongong in late August. It wouldn't happen to be the two tenor quartet would it.

Thanks Mim, i'll check it out. (and you did confirm my generalisation... ) Jvmac - it's not the 2 tenor 4tet i'm bringing, but my usual 4tet with Sam Keevers, Ben Vanderwal and Rodrigo Aravena. Looking forward to coming.

Hey Alison, I have heard that CD and it is beautiful. Till Bronner is an interesting player. I dig that he plays in a way that adds to the emotional point of the album, rather than trying to show off . I know that breathy understated approach is not for everyone, but it really work with Marks amazing singing.

Hey Gianni- Yeah, Till's playing is really beautiful...the breathy thing takes a bit getting used to, but I absolutely love his melodic ideas... ;D

Hey Jamie I've got both of those tracks on a Columbia Billie Holiday disc. 'best of...' or some such title. Could email you mp3's if you want.
