Before i go on, hopefully this won't be another post of mine that gets deleted, i promise this is not a pointless drunk conversation. I know tool isn't really what you would consider "jazz" but bands like radiohead are well known as influentional to many jazz guys out there. not many bands have the kind of musical integrity that tool has. It is a very influential sound, to me, showa44 has moments where i could almost swear i was at a tool concert.
anyway...
Ok, I didn't believe the new tool album could have been leaked. so when i saw that there was a torrent available, i laughed and figured it would be funny to see what someone put together to fake that. to my surprise it was the actual album. how it has been leaked i don't know. I think they did a good job keeping it underwraps considering this album was 5 years in the making. Despite the fact i should wait till the album is officially released, i couldn't help it, i gave in and listened to the whole thing.
Unbelieveable.
It is a sound that can really only be one band. sure. But as always, they have created an album with its own sound.
I know this won't be leaving my cd player for a long time (once i finally get my hands on it).
I can't get over the sounds they get. particualy adam jones..... beautiful stuff
Just curious what do ppl listen to outside of "jazz"

Not tool, but some metal. Zydeco, Blues, Country, Roots (wot the f**k is roots?) anything from the deep south yee ha! (wot does he mean deep south, Tasmania?) Always Frank Zappa.
Lately whatever is on Classic FM. Which seems to be endless violin concertos.
Beethoven, Mozart, Ravel, Messian, Beastie Boys, whatever the ipod throws up.
Jazz is pretty boring when you get down to the crux of it.

lol standard chordal structure? I thought pop music only ever used.. like 3 chords - and the 3rd chord was just chord 1 minus the 5th! lol

Yo kiddos:
Let us all calm down a little. Let's take a deep breath and let us all just chillax...
I seem to run in to this: Elitist pretentious jazz nazi blah blahs VS 3 chord non-musical pop slu*s all the time. God! It was tired and pointless when we were all at college, I mean... Mm, that's right, the pop dudes never went to college...
Mm, anyway. A 2-5-1 chord progression doesn't guarantee that what you'll get will be jazz. In fact, in this day and age, a 2-5-1 will almost certainly mean that it's NOT JAZZ..
Let us not forget that a great big chunk of jazz standards, most of which seem to invariably have 2-5-1's in them were originally show tunes (from musicals) which is akin to saying that they were in fact the pop tunes of their day.
Let us get back to informed comments and let's leave sweeping generalisations like: "Radiohead has this this song that doesn't have a 2 5 1 in it and everyone's like WHOA! what!?" ... And also: "bands like radiohead are well known as influentional to many jazz guys out there".
I'm a jazz muso. I have been influenced by many things, from The Simpsons to the nursury rhymes that my mum used to sing in the kitchen when I was four or five. I have never heard Radiohead but if I do, I promise you, the last fuc**n thing on my mind will be to listen out for 2-5-FUC**N-1's!!!!
In regards to actual jazz nazis, all I can say is that there are d*ckheads everywhere we look and their d*ickhead-ness transcends musical styles (in every scene it seems). In fact, they seem to follow me wherever I go...
Let's give this tired, old, childish and pointless argument a rest. Please!!!

I had the good chance to listen to the new album last night. Its WIKKID. I was quite blown away – I especially love the production techniques. Excellent production. Just brilliant. Good album. Not good enough for me to consider buying (Im extremely picky – the last album I actually went into a store to purchase was over a year ago), but certainly good musicianship in there.
