MEDIA RELEASE
James Morrison & Joe Chindamo Quartet at Bennetts Lane
Jazz Lab
Bennetts Lane
Weds May 24th
8.30 pm
The launch of the new double CD 2 x 2 in Melbourne is the first time Australia’s jazz legend, James Morrison, will perform at the Melbourne jazz club.
The long awaited recording collaboration between multi-instrumentalist James Morrison and renowned pianist/composer Joe Chindamo is already being acclaimed.
The album, aptly titled 2x2 (two by two) is a double disc release that features a selection of repertoire – classics mixed with some originals – spontaneously arranged and recorded in one session and on one disc with a quartet and in the other as a duo.
It features James, Joe and a rhythm section comprising John Morrison on drums and Phil Stack on bass (also a member of Thirsty Merc when he's not playing alongside James) on one CD and the other, the duo. The recording is a combination of clever spot arrangements and spontaneous improvisation.
Says James Morrison of Joe “He has more facility on the piano than you could ever wish for, his energy is boundless, he is forever inventive and never settles for the obvious (unless it's the best). Never ask Joe for an idea unless you are prepared for an avalanche of creativity, every time. But none of these things are his greatest gift. The reason Joe Chindamo arrests you when you hear him is his sheer love of what he does, a love that sparkles from every note.”
The magic of this great combination of talents is such that often no run though was done before a ‘take’, most of the tracks on the recording are the first ‘take’
Joe Chindamo says: “James is a musical genius, it is great to work with him. It took us twenty years to get together to make music (largely thanks to the former artistic director of the Melbourne Jazz Festival, Adrian Jackson), for me it was worth the wait, because after having established our own respective paths now, it’s nice to combine all our “stuff” and let the chemistry just happen.”
Here you have the fruits of a potent combination of great Australian talents contained in this new release 2x2 and a performance not to be missed in the wonderfully intimate setting of the Jazz Lab at Bennetts Lane.
