stomp on a cockroach usually takes two stomps so it must be 2/2 x a a zillion choruses for each cockroach with no coda and they survive without their heads for 10 days so no head just chorus after chorus like this a one a two and a one and a two Stomp Stomp/1 2/ stomp stomp/1 2 ad infinitum no A A B A either mate

Probably for the same reason that St. Louis Blues is not a blues (along with many others)!! I guess that 'stomp' is a vigorous-sounding word that a pop-tune writer (remembering that jazz was pop in the days of Jelly Roll Morton) thought might help to sell a song.

not quite don jordon... in fact highly innacurate.
St Louis Blues is a blues. the 8 bar minor verse ISN'T but the chorus IS a blues in Bb if I remember correctly.
While I'm not particularly familiar with king porter stomp and shrevenport stomp I can assure you that the blackbottom stomp is indeed a stomp as I've been learning it all week. in fact it's a 20 bar stomp - a variation yes, but most definately a stomp. it has an intro which is repeated, a verse, which happens once with the melody and then twice with solos on breaks, an interlude (modulation) and then a million choruses of stomp, stomp, stomp stomp STOMP!!
one of the arts that has been lost to us as modern jazz musicians and which I've only been priveleged to learn about recently is the beauty of the long form, which jazz music inhereted from marching bands. Traditionally at least one section and often up to 4 or 5 would precede the choruses which would be repeated over and over again. with the melody first, then maybe some ensemble choruses and then solos maybe the melody again and a big 'out' chorus. although there are coutless thousands of variations of this.
absolutely none of this had ever been discussed even in passing during my ten years education at the vca. (!) and I imagine the situation would be pretty similar at other institutions. Now I'm NOT saying that tradition is the most important thing about making music, but i think it can be important especially in the incredibly un-groundbreaking world of jazz. and to be frank the whole idea that jazz history begins with charlie parker and finishes with john coltrane is fucking scary. theres a whole 50 years before that period, and a whole 35 years after that period. and thats just jazz music.

in relation to long forms etc i have to say that i am peeved greatly when singers don't sing the verses to songs. Especially old ones like Don't Mean a thing... what a great verse that tune has

yeah shaggaz, you r rite. ok i admit it i watch dancing with the stars, and it shits me that they mess around with the songs so they lose more than half of the verses of some really great tunes. Is it Chong? Is it 7? Who knows but at least good on em for having a real live band.

I dunno shaggaz.... SOME of the verses are beautiful; I cover the water fronts nice... I sing the verse in the head in and out. but others like... c'est si bon... suck serious balls. pennies from heaven good verse don't mean a thing... shit song, who cares about the verse
singing every verse is stupid. singing no verses even more so. being a jazz singer in the first place stupidest of them all.

now i don't remember anyone talking too much during my degree about those old long forms, but to be fair I do remember there being a fair bit of encouragement to write pieces that were a lot more than just head/solos/head...furthermore I always used to rail about all the stuff that I hadn't been taught and now that I am a teacher I find my students are CONTINUOUSLY claiming not to have been told things that I know I have discussed with them on a daily basis, so perhaps I have finally found a little humility after all these years...great thread, by the way...
