I'm looking for trumpet, tenor sax, piano, bass and drums for my hard bop sextet in Melbourne. (Freddie, Wayne, Cedar, Jymie and Art - where are you?!) Beautiful Hubbard, Shorter, J. J., Golson, Fuller (and many others) compositions are waiting to be played with skill, energy, passion and commitment. Must read and be willing to woodshed the charts. Must want to be on the bandstand much more than at the bar!! No whip from me, but lots of musical carrot.
If your first question is "How much does it pay?", then forget it. Playing a minority interest music is for love of the music itself and for those who love to listen to it. If one can get paid occasionally for it, then that's a secondary benefit. Quality will generate its own market, IMHO. Without a quality band, money cannot even be asked for. Play good music and the audience will come.

OK. Thanks for nothing, Captain. As Thumper's mum taught him - if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. Kazuo - cheap laughs are worth nothing!
Otherwise, as far as money goes my feeling is this - if you can accurately sightread charts and chords, play with passion, and don't need any rehearsal except what is learnt on the stand, I'd love to have you in the band. If I could get a group of people like that, then I would happily be able to sell the band and look for paying gigs straight off. As a leader, I have to know that the band will do a professional and exciting job that I can depend on - no excuses - because my reputation with bookers and venue owners depends on me - not anyone else - producing the goods. Anybody else up for it?
Ladylex, I have lots of charts (say 50 at the moment, with more in the pipeline), and thanks for the good wishes. Those I like to hear.

Hey Don Jordan, seeing as you're looking for trumpet, tenor sax, piano, bass and drums I'm just wondering what you'll play? I'm guessing bone or percussion or... vocals? Or are you the manager?

Is this a conspiracy theory? So was the coma just a ploy for Don to flee to Australia to leave his life as Geronimo behind and become a trombonist?

Oh dear! Looks as though I'm dead!! Yes, folks, you're seeing the words of a trombone player coming through from the far side. Anyone you want me to contact for you while I'm here? The boxing game was a bit tough, so I thought playing trombone on a cloud would be better than strumming the old harp. Crikey - what next?!
