Mark, based on the unfortunate experience of watching Mr Colaiuta "play" with (the other) Bill Evans at MIJF a few years back, I can't think of a drummer less suitable for your music. Your music as I know it and, as I say, based only on that gig. I'm unaware of that drummer's wider CV and not in any hurry to explore it! Kenny, based on my understanding of you as a sensitive human being with an open mind I can't think of a more thoughtless comment to make 12 days before somebody flies off to do a project they have mortgaged their house to help pay for. Your professional opinion will be welcomed when you receive the CD, not before. (BTW, that's my "Kenny, . . . etc" response at the personal level, since your comment started "Mark, . . etc". As far as this actual forum is concerned, as stated earlier in this thread, strong, ill-informed opinion certainly has its rightful place)

Here's my unsolicited two cents.
Vinnie's a hell of a player, and you know what ever he does, he'll play his ass off. I've heard stuff of his that I really like and stuff that I loathed, but it had more to do with the whole situation than his playing. I don't know what material Mark has planned, but I'm pretty sure he'd pick Vinnie for a reason, not just on a whim. Have Vinnie and Jay worked together before?
Anyway, with Muller on board, what could go wrong?

Thanks alimcg for giving me some credit as a thoughtful musician. I'm not saying any more about the project at all. The proof (or lack thereof) will be in the pudding.

I agree that Vinnie is incredible...and he's a lovely person as well... met him years ago in passing, and was touched by his humility. Mark, I know it will be an amazing recording...what a line-up! Have fun in LA!!!

Hey Mark I don't know if you're familiar with Zappa's instrumental record 'Shut up and play yer guitar' - Vinnie's drumming on this is phenomenal - in fact hearing some of the rhythmic things he attempts with Frank makes me wonder what he'd sound like playing Tinklebum's music.

Sorry Mark for be such a clod, but I was interested in your choice of drummer, and have no fears about the ability of you and him to deliver the goodies for you - as you invariably do. Sheesh - in responding to calls for more firm views, all I seem to have done is upset a pal. Fuck this shit - I've had it with this place. It's like walking on fucking eggshells, fucking whiney-ass musos all over the place. (Not you Mark, just the vibe in general ...)

Stuff that! Vinnie Colaiuta is one of the most incredible drummers in this world. And going off simply by one performance/hearing is ridiculous - especially considering the fact that Vinnie has an incredibly massive career behind AND ahead of him. I feel privileged KNOWING that Mark is playing with Vinnie. Now I have 2 degrees of separation from Vinnie! Wheeee! LOL Kenny - to write what you have written based merely upon one experience is simply amazing. How do people manage to do this? I was shattered just by reading your post. I cant imagine how Mark must feel. WHERE THE HELL IS THE SUPPORT?
Im interested too: are there any Australian musicians who can lay claim to working with Vinnie at all? Id be be VERY interested to know who they are.
This IS an issue. The lack of support, the general spouting of unwanted negative krap that stems from jealousy and insecurity, is something I keep noticing. Not just here on this forum (god forbid someone should introduce something 'new' to the table!), but the industry in general. Im constantly disgusted by the narrow minded pathetic views many people have towards our industry. No Industry can not generate without a damn good dose of positive energy. I am often accused of being over zealous in my enthusiasm. Well I tell you: Id much prefer to be overly enthusiastic (even if its painful to everyone else; too fcuken bad) than to be apathetic and quick to criticism.
Positive energy people. pfft. Is it so damn hard?
EDIT: And Kenny – youre statement that you’ve had enough of being here is simply childish. Swallow it and take the opp to look into Vinnie’s music. If Mark is more than willing to work with him (hell and financially commit himself to such a man; may as well marry the guy Mark!), surely youd take the time out to see why Mark would consider doing so? If we’re all being personal here – surely youd respect Mark’s musical judgement. If you were a true friend, youd see that such a statement could only be hurtful – not constructive.

Sorry Mark for be such a clod Apology definitely accepted - and please don't go! Wearing my forum hat what you said was of course fine. Purely as a personal note Kenny to Mark it was just lousy timing and I reacted. I'm over it now - sorry. Guess I shouldn't have pre-announced the project as was suggested, although I'd like to have thought I could safely do that here, it's kinda nice when your mates wish you all the best as has happened (thanks Alison etc). Is it REALLY eggshells around here?? The extreme vile personal abuse had to go and has. It also could be called "walking on eggshells" if people can't get sensitive about a post and express that, as I and others have done. A non-eggshell forum should allow for hurt feelings. In my experience, apart from out and out evil (which I have seen here) the truth is usually in the middle and there's a lesson for both. Usually the sensitivity is understandable (as I hope mine was) so that's a kind of "think before you speak" lesson for one party (which we can all learn from at various times), but usually the sensitive person can learn to be less sensitive, as part of my mission is to learn how to do. I do hope that fleeing in exasperation is the last resort. It's like life here, feelings come out and they can be dealt with and move on. In some ways, these places are MORE like life, as it's a mind meld here and it all hangs out, real life is often more mannered and ritualised. By the way -speaking of eggshells - four letter words are no longer banned here. That was a default that came with a package, I've unchecked it. EDIT: I didn't read LadyLex's posting before my post as I was in the process of typing it when she posted. I stand by gestures of reconcialiation towards Kenny, but LadyLex, I appreciate what you have said, as I don't resile from my view of Kenny's comments as ill-advised and, well, ignorant. But in the big picture Kenny is an incredibly valuable member of the scene and a generous guy who is normally really supportive. He does have some blind spots, most notably about jazz fusion music (I could write a thesis on this strange phenomenon as it occurs in Australia amongst so many key critics, festival directors and even musicians. Particularly about drummers. One festival director who shall remain nameless put forward the view at a dinner that Dave Wekl was "not a musician" !!!!. People hate the Yellowjackets on principle. On the other side they hate Maria Schneider. It's a strange world if that is the direction hate goes in. I don't even hate Kenny G. I don't LIKE it. It's just bland instrumental pop music, but there's music out there that is like corrosive acid to my soul in a way that bland simple music is infinitely preferable too. But that's just me.

Do you really care if Im okay? No? then why ask! You seem affronted. Dear me. Should I be asking if youre okay? But why would I since I don’t really care? You can obviously take care of yourself.
Ive been aware of this project for some time now and from the first moment I was informed, I was instantly WOW AWESOME. And I remain amazed that people aren’t gushing with the enthusiasm. This could lead to something quite incredible. Its already incredible!
I adore Vinnie. Kenny, in all his right, is the first person EVER Ive seen who has indicated otherwise. Like I said: Its amazing. I didn’t say: Kenny, you idiot you moron you jerk. (which he isn’t. I love Kenny’s gumbo). I was amazed. And wrote as such. And am still amazed. Wow. There are people out there not into Vinnie. Im still amazed!
BTW: please don’t twist my words. I was not implying that Kenny was jealous or insecure. Only that my observations of the industry indicate such.
Anywho: Ive been listening to Evanescene. Defintely my most favourite of Maria’s albums. Especially My Lament. I love Rich Perry’s and Rick Margitza’s beautiful tones (why aren’t tenors flouted as often as altos I wonder?). I just love the title Dance you Monster to my soft song. What a kak! LOL

My mistake! Yeah My Lament is a great chart. I'm going to grab it at some point for the MJO, beautiful melody and I love the chorale section at the beginning. It's tough buying her charts, while they're worth US$115 a pop, it still adds up in a hurry!
