Hey how come no one is writing about what a great gig that was??? you lazy nerds. We should all worship at the feet of Simon Barker . He is so COOL man, what an amazing musician! Can someone/anyone/someone make him move to Melbourne please??? he would be much happier living here. Great great GREAT line up Julien mind blowing gig/so much talent on one stage etc etc great great gig one to remember for sure and the audience was mainly full of other jazz musicians who definately paid to get in??? right? Jordan Murray fresh from It Takes Two so go on and shout us a beer Jordo, you are still one cool mother mate. lol

Didn't catch that one, but saw the trio part of the launch. Kicked arse, thoroughly enjoyed it, bought the CD. Go team!

How easy is Julians' CD to get, especially north of the border, tried the sound vault website, but no luck, checked Birdland, they didn't have it yet. Julian can you help a pair of Jamberoo hillbilly's. Are you bringing some up for the Freedmans? Love what I've heard on Mal's program.

The Sunday night was a great gig. I have few enough gigs as it is without Simon living in Melbourne too! Or maybe I should say "oh, it's nice with Simon living in Sydney, 'cause then when he does play in Melbourne, it makes it more special." Man, Simon's playing would still be special if I saw him every night of the week.
Now, I paid to get in - should I not have?!?! I always liked that Art Blakey saying "if you're friends won't pay to see you play, who will?"

Love what I've heard on Mal's program. that is why everyone needs their own website with their cds for sale if they are serious about selling music speaking of CDs has anyone checked out www.pandora.com can not find ONE aussie cd there but they say if you send them they will add them to their list pandora.com is DIY radio playlist (like dig but u pick the artists and they play 'other artsits a bit like that one" and if you don;t like it you tell them and they wont play it again. great system. and if you like something they play you can buy the tune or the cd cool check it out and send them your cd julien so jvmac can buy it or at least hear it!

Okay Ali, I'll bite - no more Cafiso discussion. Julien's method of composing has got me thinking alot - it's where his individuality seems to shine the most. The way the melodies are written seem to allow total rhythmic freedom, it seems to come a little from Jarrett's records from the 70's, but having said that you'd never mistake it for Jarrett, it's pure Jules. I love that feeling where the melody and harmony is dictating the pace of the song, it's 'free' without being blip blop music. The only other band i've heard taking such a flexible approach is Branford M's band, on a couple of tracks on 'Requiem' and particularly a song called 'Eternal' on the album of the same name. In fact, the first time I heard that track I thought, "Jules has been playing this way for years, and now Branford's 'copying' him!" By the way if you're reading this Julien, I'll take my lips off your arsehole now, just trying to start a musical discussion....

They were compositions that could quite easily have fallen on their arse, but those guys played the shit out of it. I thought the gig pretty well encapsulated the best things about Australian jazz - guys with their own musical voices playing great compositions, all readily definable as Australian; guys who know the tradition of the music, but are not at all weighed down by it.

That group is THE shit....the recording is a killer too. All 3 of those guys put in 100% everytime they play. Jules' tune Rebellious Bird is one of the most beautiful melodies I have heard.

Just heard the entire Sam Keevers nonet recordings on Jazzhead - wow wish I had been at that concert, some great playing by one of the best nine pieces anyone in oZ could put together. Well done Sam.
