hi all,
shameless self promotion here, hope to see some of you while in town...
==========================================
29th AUGUST
Ren Walters, Chris Bekker, Will Guthrie
Bennetts Lane (presented by the MJC)
Melbourne
The trio of expatriate drummer/percussionist Will Guthrie, electric bassist Chris Bekker and guitarist Ren Walters brings together three of Australia's most original, flexible and daring improvisers in a rare meeting.
With a focus on improvisation as a method of working, rather than a 'stylistic correctness', this attitude has led them to play in countless settings with countless musicians, from rock, pop, theatre, flamenco, rock, jazz, free improv., etc. All three have worked together in many combinations over the years. Bekker and Walters played and toured together in Walters' group TIP as well as groups under the leadership of Niko Schauble. Will Guthrie was a co-founder with Ren Walters of the "Improvised Tuesdays" series at The Planet Cafe (which evolved into the Make-It-Up Club) and also played together as a duo and in many different combinations.
Guthrie has been based overseas (London, Paris and now Nantes) for the last few years playing extensively throughout Europe, where has met with many worldclass improvisers as well as playing electroacoustic percussion solo concerts and producing recordings (the latest of which has been released on the UK label Cathnor).
This brief visit should provide a very special meeting based on passed collective experience and also the promise of new directions. See:

30th AUGUST
ASSUMPTIONS TRIO (Stephen Magnusson, Julien Wilson, Will Guthrie)
Northcote Social Club
Melbourne
Assumptions is a Melbourne based jazz/improv/rock/ambient-power trio that has been hailed as one of the most significant groups on the Australian scene.
Stephen Magnusson, Will Guthrie and Julien Wilson are recognised widely as among the strongest and most original players of their generation and as such have each been awarded the most prestigious prize in Australian jazz: the National Jazz Award. The trio was formed in 2002, and quickly developed into one of Australia’s more exciting, dynamic and intriguing improvisational groups. The three blend seamlessly together to create a unified ensemble sound that defies conventions and classification.
They have released two albums, assumptions2 & departures both of which received many positive reviews, and were finalists for a Bell Award for Best Australian Contemporary Jazz Group
With Guthrie currently based in France, this will be their only Melbourne show during 2006.
PRESS:
“Assumptions - are not just three exceptional improvisers, they are three of our most distinctive players on their respective instruments.... the ability to sustain intensity over long periods was a marvel” Sydney Morning Herald
“The assumptions trio is one of the most potent and distinctive units in Australian jazz. Like The Necks and Band Of 5 Names, they are worth catching 'live' at every opportunity.. truly exhilarating.” Rhythms
"They have forged a new musical concept transcending category. It was a stunningly successful perfomance on all levels" Mike Nock - pianist/composer
