Well done Simon! I haven't kept up much with what has gone down here at ozjazzforum recently, although what I have seen is lots of slagging off and useless crap, I'm not surprised Mark doesn't want his name on it... Just curious if the 'slaggers' are musicians? ...probably me thinks... also just curious if these people ever/have ever organized gigs( for themselves and/or others), run a label, released their own music, released other people's music, done radio shows etc ...probably not me thinks... for me the frightening thing here is that so much talk and energy goes into bagging the critics, bagging the labels, bagging the venues, and in some cases (maybe many) rightly so! I agree that there is a lack of adequate venues, labels, distributors, knowledgeable critics etc...and I'm not saying we DON'T talk about these issues, that would be denying certain realities of the situation... But what are we doing about it? organizing our own gigs, running our own labels, writing our own reviews, running our own radio shows?

LOL.. Doubt it. But do you really want to continue the bad vibes? And besides.. the majority of peeps on here are musos.. so Im quite sure theyre quite skilled in getting their own gigs But congrats Simon. I really enjoy your drumming.. glad to see you are out there and doing stuff. PLEASE COME TO BRISBANE AGAIN REAL SOON!

PS Ive only been recently intoduced to the delight that is James Muller (im sorry.. I have a ‘thing’ against guitar in that I cant stand ‘em! LOLs) and Im so impressed. He has such a beautiful approach to the music and the musicians around him. Would I be mistaken in thinking he has a very Wes Montgomery style? Its like he’s having lots of conversations with himself and the musos. *sigh. How awesome.

oo! And Peter Sculthorpe.. what an interesting composer. Simon – did he compose the tunes specifically for you? Or did you approach him?

pfft. Dont worry about me. I just thought Id see backlash. I guess it comes down to the almighty $$. Lynetter Irwin organised Pinnacles (and prolly is doing so this year too? I cant remember what she told me in March) for years. And Im quite sure she didnt make a profit. Sure she generated a whole slew of gigs and PR for great jazz musos.. but why would you go to all the effort of organising a jazz festival if the punters arent into it themselves? I dont think that way myself - Im the sort who will keep whipping the poor pony if it means everyone in the wagon gets to the performance ;D *cheeky grin. But when $$ feature heavily... its a sad reality, but jazz isnt really profitable. *big sadface. We can have all the amazing musos we like.. but punters will prefer their silly thoughtless pop krap instead. So... I guess youre question is: how do we make jazz more relevant to the community?

If you had a beer festival with jazz musos there'd be no beer left for the punters.
