I was chatting to a good mate who is currently in New York. He was telling me all about the Jazz Club ‘Smoke’ and assuring me I would love it, not just for the awesome music, but for the incredible décor. This got me to thinking about the Jazz Clubs Ive been in. I loved Bennetts Lane - I could feel the history of the place just by walking through its doors. I have yet to enter the newly formed Brisbane Jazz Club Maggie Blacks. The now redundant Holiday Inn or Travelodge “The Lodge” in Brisbane was a total dive – but it wasn’t the décor that lured the punters (gosh.. memories of that carpet alone! LOLs); it was the amazing music. I got to see Renee Geyer, Dave Weckl, Billy Cobham and so many other incredible jazz musos there before the doors closed.
Maybe the décor rocked your boat, or maybe it was the music that you will never forget. What are the amazing jazz clubs that you have been in or would like to see?

Not a dedicated jazz club by any stretch, but my fave venue is Tilley's in Canberra. Can fit 220 or so punters, but still very intimate. I feel it's one of those places that you walk into, and straight away you know the band will play their arses off. The food is pretty good too.

No, it's in one of the Northern suburbs (was it hippo you played at antboy? fits your description). Tilley's is probably not the place to go unless there is a gig there, but anyway mim, I thought you'd be used to the footpaths being rolled up at 9:30pm, being from South Australia and all!

I quite like the hippo when small bands are playing there. nice staff, nice vibe.
Am going to NY soon, so can't wait to check out all the goodies.

The Hippo is a small bar in Canberra. Formerly the Red Room. I used to go to the Red Room jam in the old days to get cut by Brendan Clarke and the likes. The only downside to hippo is the occassional group of wankers who sit in the middle of the room talking really loudly, ignoring the death stares of those around them. It always seemed strange that people would pay $10 to get into a venue on a Wednesday night (hippo's main jazz night) just so they can talk loud and be obnoxious. Then again, they may be members of ozjazzforum.

Funny, I have heard great music in what could be described as a pretty crappy room - for that time it was the best jazz club ever. I have also heard some crap music in what could be described as the greatest jazz club ever and for that time it was the worst jazz club ever. Granted, the history of a place can influence the senses and indeed provide a feeling of connection with whatever it was that occured in that space (not only music), but ultimately it is surely about the music.

Oh absolutely. I love the undressed stripped 'dingy' feeling you can get from a divey type of place. It adds a frisson of 'slumming' .. like you might be doing something almost forbidden or nawty (everyone should do something nawty at least once in their lives!) ;D But humans are aesthetic creatures.. we covet beautiful things. So pretty clubs with lovely music is going to be a pleasing experience. Sure: The music makes the place - not the place the music. Id still interested in the different jazz clubs that spot our globe- pretty or not Imagine.. Jazz in NY during the 1940s. The thought is just too drool worthy ;D
