I have been longing to visit The Stone in New York...The club run by Zorn and maintained purely on the strength of limited edition recordings...

Bennetts Lane is a far better jazz club than smoke IMO -smoke is like a hip bar that has great jazz where as Bennett's is about soley listening to jazz. Thurs - onwards smoke is like a funk night.

Oh by the way shaggaz- check our Lennox Lounge in Harlem - the room is great - from the 1930s - they get some good acts there - not the big names but some great local music. - have a local beer for me -.... the best beer in the US (not hard) ... it is called sugar hill.

Is a jazz club something used for whacking sax players with? If so, where do you get 'em?

And your opinion is based on . . .what exactly, Glen? Compared to what? Is it in the area of comfort? Acoustics? Programming? Service? We need to know.

I'll answer that.
Bennetts Lane
The accoustics are great.
People come to listen. - they don't talk through the set ect.
It's a place where musicians are allowed to express themselves. It is not an entertainment complex that has acts come in and are compelled to entertain us so to speak.
This is compared to 90% of venues I have seen - This includes The Blue Note NY, Smoke ect.
The Village Vanguard is a real Jazz club.
And Kazuo - you're a drummer - love hitting things!
The vibe is great.
Unfortunately the drinks are too expensive!

cornelia st cafe, joe's pub, 55bar and barbes are four clubs in NY that I have visited over the last few weeks which are great.
Barbes is particularly good for it's cheap prices, friendly staff and good room to listen in, bar the piano which is an upright and a little out of tune. I saw Taborn/Parker/Cleaver at the Stone too, which was amazing. For those that don't know, the room is is quite stony, with some chairs and cushions, a nice sound system and a grand piano. No bar, which is a nice change.
see ya'll soon I'm back Friday :-)

Ornette you took the word out of my mouth. Agree bout the drinks but I dont think they seel a lot of em. Compared to a lot of established clubs Bennetts has a fairly good record of consistant high quality jazz tho last year that has started to change for the worse i.e. Renee Geyer is great but not exaclty a 'dedicated jazz' artist.

Same can be said for Mossy and let's not forget Prince! I can see the logic in getting acts like this to help support being able to put on music of a less 'commercial' nature - but where do you draw the line. Wasn't the Basement a dedicated jazz venue once upon a time?

The acoustics are good in the small room but not great in every part of the big room. Neither room is all that comfortable, the service is polite or non-existent. Programming is good but two nights are programmed by the MJC. Fri/Sat programming has taken a definite commercial turn in the last two years. I don't care that much if a place is a musicians' hang because I don't hang with musicians. Maybe it brings in a communal thing, I don't know. I do know the money is crap for musicians when it's not a door deal and the club never does any international acts itself and doesn't really support promoters who do. So a very good club for Australia but there are many around the world who are much better in those areas where Benntts is weak and have similar or greater strengths.
