Just to let Sydney people know about an upcoming project at the newly-renovated Side On Cafe in June.
While performing at the Perth International Arts Festival in February, I had a chance to play with outstanding young Perth-based saxophonist Graeme Blevins. Graeme was a finalist in both the 2002 Freedman Fellowship and Wangaratta National Jazz Awards Saxophone Competition, has recently been performing with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and has studied in New York with Chris Potter and Seamus Blake. I have asked Graeme to play on my new jazz CD recording at Sony Music Studios in early June which will feature a repertoire of original tunes. The rhythm section will be the one with which I recently did a 15-gig national tour - Ben Waples (bass) and Felix Bloxsom (drums) and James Muller will be special guest guitarist on one track.
We have two gigs for the quartet while Graeme is in Sydney to record the CD, both at the Side On Cafe on Wednesdays June 2 & 9. Since Graeme will arrive from Perth only a few hours before the first Wednesday we will play a repertoire based on standards that night. Having rehearsed and recorded my compositions in the meantime we will play these at the second show.
In other news, I will be overseas in late June/July performing in Korea, Latvia, Estonia and other places TBA. My website (URL below) has been recently updated and includes a "News" section to which I post several times a week, there is a "Comments" facility for feedback. My recent CD release Keeping the Standards (Vorticity Music) with Jay Anderson and Adam Nussbaum has received some very good reviews (see website "News").
Hope to see you at the Side On.
