Hey Y'All, Just joined ozjazzforum this arvo, thinking that some of you might be interested to hear about the National Jazz Writing Competition. $750 prize plus publication in The Bulletin For reviews of Australian jazz CDs and gigs This is the comp's second year, and I'd like to see lots of entries. Closing date 10 September; winner will be announced at Wang. You know how this started? I'm a writer who loves listening to live jazz (and some CDs) and I also like meeting / talking to musos particularly chin wags about the creative process. I got sick of explaining to people why I don't do reviews. It's not enough to love the music, you need to know stuff too :-) It's a specific skill, and often not done well. I wanted to encourage some healthy competition and raise the profile of this type of writing. Not sure if that's actually happening, but hey, it's a start! More information www.jazz-planet.com/njwcAll enquiries welcome, post here or email me! miriam@jazz-planet.com

Why is jazz writing equated ONLY with reviewing? I reckon you can be a fine jazz writer without ever reviewing.

On a side issue, in line with my interest in cross pollination between art forms, I reckon a writer's residency at jazz festivals is a fantastic idea... Pick me! Pick me!! However (ahem) I thought I'd start with reviews because it seemed to be an area that it might be easier to administer a competition in. And maybe more straightforward to find people to participate (for example)

Is it run each year? Thank you, always loving, Lady Lex Hey Ladylex. This is year 2 for the competition. I expect it'll keep on going as long as people are interested in submitting entries... hint hint... you know you can't say no. You already admitted that!

you can not, repeat, can not write about music without reviewing some aspect of it i.e. writing your opinion , there has never been writing about someone else's music without an opinion in it, they are therefore all reviews

Glen!
There are distinct journalistic forms - review, article, interview, essay etc. There may be certain overlaps in possible content as you allude to but the differences in structure, relative weighting of content and journalistic protocols make them overwhelmingly distinct from each other. Even within each of those forms there are sub-forms - eg CD reviews vs live reviews (the competition encompasses both).
Your statement is like someone going "Everything's da blues man". Well, no.

sorry don't agree a feature contains views on the quality and validity of the music as does an interview as does CD and concert reviews

And a symphony and a string quartet both have themes which are developed, but they ain't the same discipline.
Please. The primary purpose of an interview or feature isn't to critique the music. They're profiles of the artist, not the work. CD liner notes are another category of jazz writing, but again they're not the same as reviews. You only say the positive things you feel about the CD in liner notes. If you have reservations, you keep them to yourself, whereas you should tell the whole truth in a review. That's why journalists don't write liner notes for AND then review the same disc.
Kenny? Miriam? aj? Tim? Please set Glen straight.......
