I am sure that most of us look around us and see nothing approaching good jazz writing happening locally: so how to go about changing it? Here is a pencil, here some paper. See what happens.

This is all very good, but do we have to call it "jazz writing" - Nobody is writing Jazz. Call me a pedant......

The reason behind the name...
(and Kazuo, that's not pedantry you speak. You make a very good point ackshewally)
The name National Jazz Writing Competition uses jazz as an adjective , referring to subject matter of the writing, not type of writing. I can see how it's potentially ambiguous. The word 'jazz' in there was because this was to be a competition that dealt with writing about jazz.
I shied away from referring to reviews in the title of the competition because I wanted to leave the door open for other genres... in fact the original idea was for jazz-related short stories, but in discussion with various members of the jazz community, the focus on reviews to start with seemed like an excellent idea.
If you have suggestions for a name change for next year, I'm open to them. This is only year 2 of the comp and there's nothing wrong with a name tweak if it improves things. I'm not married to the NJWC as a name; it just seemed to explain things quite well.

you're right - difficult to come up with something else. Tried a few - Jazz essay writing, jazz stories, jazz dissertations - none really work. I reckon Jazz Writing is about right.

What about 'The Zolin Award for Distinguished Jazz Criticism'?
One could set about winning the Ozjazz Grand Slam: a Bell, an ARIA, a Zolin, a Freedman, and a National Jazz Award. Do it in a year and win a month's residency on Wednesday nights at Bennetts Lane.
(Now please no-one get upset. I'm just free-associating.)

I'd really love to see someone get the Zolin award for a review of their own Freedman performance, which was recorded and won an ARIA, followed by a Bell for Best OZJazz release, culminating in a National Jazz award for overall excellence. Now, that'd be something to write home about!
