COOL NIGHTS HOT JAZZ
JAZZGROOVE MOTHERSHIP ORCHESTRA FEATURING FLORIAN ROSS
“The most impressive aspect was that such a band could reach this level of cohesion and repertoire…the outer reaches of the universe would be the limit"
Sydney Morning Herald
Comprising Australia’s finest jazz artists, Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra will perform one-night-only with multi-award winning German Pianist and Composer Florian Ross at the Powerhouse on Sunday 24 September 2006.
Nominated Australian Jazz Ensemble of the Year 2006, Sydney’s 17-piece Mothership orchestra includes James Morrison Scholarship winner Evan Mannell, ARIA award winner James Muller and five National Jazz Award winners.
Mothership alto saxophonist David Theak says the musicians are excited about performing with Florian Ross, who recently won the prestigious WDR Jazzpreis award honouring his outstanding talent as a composer and arranger.
“Florian Ross is such a diverse and accomplished musician at such a young age; he has achieved so much international recognition, and is the musician’s musician among artists,” Theak said.
“This is a man who has written for the biggest names in jazz, including saxophonist David Liebman, Brussels Jazz Orchestra and Vancouver Jazz Orchestra; it will be amazing to present our music alongside him,” he said.
Winner of the coveted Thad Jones/Danish Radio Big Band award for composition, Florian Ross has played and worked with the likes of Vince Mendoza, Bob Brookmeyer, Peter Bolte, Jeff Cascaro and Jim McNeely.
Aided by Florian’s ability to combine conventional and multi-stylistic, avant-garde approaches, the Mothership will perform traditional and contemporary big band compositions, including swing music and experimental material.
The concert will also feature improvised solos by artists such as James Muller, Roger Mannins, Mat Jodrell, David Theak and Queensland’s own Jeremy Borthwick.
Drawn from the ranks of Sydney’s Jazzgroove Association, the Mothership orchestra was formed by David Theak in 2003 and has an average age of 29 with the youngest musician aged 22.
Theak, who led two tours of Europe with his own band theak-tet, says without the Powerhouse the Mothership would not be embarking on their current East Coast Australian tour.
“Without the support of a highly renowned venue such as the Powerhouse there would be no tour; so we are very grateful for the Powerhouse’s initiative, which is crucial to the fact that the project could come to fruition,” David said.
For one night only Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra featuring Florian Ross will perform at the Brisbane Powerhouse Cool Nights Hot Jazz Festival curated by Mark Isaacs.
Cool Nights Hot Jazz also features Japan-Australia Jazz Orchestra (JAJO), Mike Nock Trio and free performances by Megan Washington, James Sherlock, Elana Stone, Mark Isaacs and Kristin Berardi.
