I've got an idea - Why don't we organise the Melbourne Jazz Festival in Umbria? - why can't we have a junket like those Italians did last year? Albert could be musical director. Loads of unrecognisable Australians doing gigs in Italian jazz clubs - ahhh.......the memories. We could even get a 6 year old sax player to do a bunch of gigs, should be good. It's sure to be a hit!!

There are many issues up for debate, but I can see at least one silver lining - we will be spared any more Italian jazz musicians. or, more accurately, Italian jazz musicans as chose by Carlo.
Others more hip to the Italian scene than I tell me there is some great stuff to be had in Italy. And there were doubtless some great and even brilliant players in the crew who hit Melbourne last year.
But the overall impression I gained was one of amiable blandness and dullness - more a reflection of the artistic director's tastes than Italian jazz at large I'm sure.

I liked the Munster family backing the 'Kid'. They were funny.

This is but another area where we have a trade deficit. More artists coming into the country than artists going out.
If the government was half as interested in helping artists as they are in helping farmers export their products, things may be a little different.

we can celebrate that at least we won't have to put up with the artistic director's choise of international jazz artists like Elton John, like those poor Umbrians do.

Just read Jazz Australia piece and 'Andra's' article.... So.... if we got lots more sponsors really really quickly, would Umbria change its mind?
(that's a joke, by the way...)

carlo pagnotta is a vile creep good riddance, just wish he'd take albare with him worst thing about this is that these fuckwits managed to secure major festival funding and you can be absolutely sure that once the three years is up that it will not be renewed and funding at that level will NEVER happen again for a jazz festival in melbourne... it's really sad. if they'd given the money to aj we'd have an absolutely slamming melbourne jazz festival with an assured future and an interesting programming direction. makes me want to fuckin scream What exactly are you trying to say?..............
