Even though Dizzy's is closing soon, I think it's important for everybody to hear what happened to a band I was playing with last night.
We were booked months ago, and the gig was advertised on the radio, in the age, and on heir website. (all of this was done by the club, not us)
Last night we showed up at 7 30, hoping to get a decent soundcheck, but there was no one there and the place was totally shut up. We waited about an hour, and the official start of the gig was 8 30, and there was about 30 people waiting to get in to watch us.(including relatives of the singer who had travelled 3 hours to be there) After many phone calls and voicemails left on relevant parties numbers, still nothing, the club remained closed and dark.
We also had invited serveral promoters and agents and other industry types to the gig, most of whom showed up, Imagine how badly this all reflects on the bandleader...
So fuck them and the horse they rode in on. Please consider giving them a piece of your mind and/or boycotting any performances you might have coming up there.
Can you ever imagine this happening at Bennett's?

So fuck them and the horse they rode in on. A very ordinary horse it is, too.

Was this booked direct? Was there a contract?
And did your bandleader.agent.mostresponsibleperson chat to a contact from the venue at least 7 days prior to the gig?

why would you chat to a contact 7 days before the gig if it was advertised on their website and in the media? At bennetts you get booked months in advance and rarely have to confirm anything.
That's very disappointing, sorry to hear that.

Its called "Taking care of business." I ALWAYS do it - regardless of whether the gig was there the week before. I never assume anything - for precisely the reasons youve just outlined. I wouldnt want to compare Bennetts to anything. Bennetts is by far superior. BTW: Did you have a signed contract? I only ask, because you can take said contract to the papers with your story - and theyre f*cked. Of course, having a signed contract can allow you to loads of things.. but that would be a nice easy start to a list of sh*tslinging

No, there is no contract. But plenty of 'evidence', ie all the fucking advertising they did!!!! It's just so unprofessional

Absolutely! but if you want maximum impact of how shoddy they are...
Its more than unproffessional by the way. Its down right wrong in so many ways. :/ Things like that make me so grumpy... I wish I was down there with you.. Id be right outside the club making a scene!
Gosh Im so sorry for you. :/

In full knowledge of the advertising going on I never suspected I'd need to confirm the gig further. It had been confirmed months ago several times and advertising material put up on the website. Instead, I worked on promoting and rehearsing for the gig/showcase. I did call again on the weekend of the gig to confirm any last minute details - and as seems to be my only response so far - got an answering machine and no reply.
The owner (not the person who booked the gig) has contacted me this afternoon and genuinely apologised which I appreciate. The "bar manager" and the booking agent were both working/playing (respectively) at the club on Sunday afternoon and apparently - just "forgot" to come back in for our evening gig. I left over 6 messages on one's home phone and mobile but as yet have received no response... The bar manager, whose contact details I don't have, has not called me to apologise or even explain circumstances - though the owner said he would give him my contact details to call me.
To be quite honest it's not only sickening and professionally embarassing, but a fucking disgraceful show of disrespect to artists/musicians. It's hard enough to get a gig, let alone an interested audience (from fucking miles away) to come out and hear new/unknown music.
I am really fucking pissed off about this. Please excuse expletives, I normally don't need them to express myself but in this case I'm sure you understand.

Hey LL, can't resist the temptation........do you now think that a signed contract should actually mean something ? (Unless of course it was signed on Diana Krall's behalf..............?)

I think blowjobsally is waiting on some new teeth or something.
Some friends of mine had a very similar experience at Barbukka. Never got a satisfactory explanation or decent apology, so now they just bad mouth the venue at every chance. Word of mouth - pretty powerful. Anyone remember Cape Live?
