Over the last two years I've been distributing Kimnara CDs myself to specialist shops around the country, ABC shops and now HMV/Sanity/Virgin. It makes sense to me because the $10-12 that distributers charge per CD is the money that will pay for the next CDs artwork, posters, postage or whatever. The $8-10 that goes to the artist will hopefully go towards their new recording. The idea being that the community of artists the label represents will slowly develop a catalogue with each CDs promo helping the others. Slow, sustainable and non-profit (all profits go back into the label) seems to work for jazz in Australia.
My experience in Australia and Asia is that each goup or collective creates it's own infrastructure that allows it put out records, approach festivals and tour internationally. As far I know there is no invisible hand that helps certain people over others.

Slow and steady SB that's the way, your ideals sound grounded in reality, congrats on your output so far. I love the Matt McMahon release 'Paths and Streams'. Really looking forward to Matt's trio release. Do you have a date for its release yet. All the best SB for the label and you for the future.

How many artists do you have on your roster currently? Are there any plans to enlarge the operation at this stage?

At this point it's a big step to release music by groups that I'm not involved in. There's a level of commitment required (CDs available at gigs, posters, internet stuff, bureaucracy) that would be difficult to give to groups beyond the community the label currently represents. I think I can can keep it going if I stick to this bunch at the moment and who knows what will happen later.
I reckon Tim Berne is really worth checking out if you want to release your own stuff. There are some great interviews with him on all about jazz and his collaboration with artist Steve Bryam is really inspiring. He seems to keep his label small enough to mangage considering his touring schedule.
