Very sad news..Melbourne bassist Gary Costello died this week. A master musician and a wonderful person as all who knew him will attest. Irreplaceable.

WHAT?!?!
That's incredibly sad and upsetting news - Gary was one of my earliest mentors.
He was so full of life - every time I would catch up with him he would have a twinkle in his eye and a broad smile, and always have the time for a chat.
Gary had so much to give. He made so much time for us youngsters when it was obvious we didn't know out arses from our elbows (especially in Tassie!). He wasn't only knowledgeable about music, but was very wise about life in general. Gary would never be explicit - he would always allude to things and guide you to making your own descisions, musical or otherwise.
Honest, generous and caring. Can't ask any more from a person.
One of a kind.
Rest in peace, Gary. We all miss you.

I'm saddened by this terrible news. Gary was a passionate man and it was always a delight to watch his face light up with boyish enthusiasm whenever he spoke about what he loved.

I can't believe this news...Gary was not only a beautiful player, but he was definitely one of the most beautiful spirits I have ever come across. He was SO supportive of everyone on their musical journey as well.
Gary, we all will miss you so much.

A huge loss for music and bassplaying. My thoughts are with everybody who knew him alot better than me.

How sad, how terribly sad, and far too early for a person to die. Gary's poor family and friends will feel the loss for a long time. It's hard to lose someone you love when they are older, let alone before they have even made it to retirement age.
We have his work to remember him as a talented musician and I believe his legacy as a mentor will carry on for a long time after many more of us have gone too. Perhaps that's a message for us all.

Gary was a great guy - always peaceful even when he felt strongley about something. Gary influenced most of the bass players in Melb. He at some time taught them. We will miss you Gary

I have just returned from OS and am shocked by this news. Gary was always such a wonderful person to be involved with musically. He had tremendous warmth , and always made you feel like he was supporting you. I also loved his very dry sense of humour. Wow, what a shock. My warmest thoughts go out to his family.
