Listening to ABC RN today a repeat of a Julie Copeland interview with the curator of a South African art gallery about European and African appropriation of art, quite provocative and may be of interest to people involved in New Australian Acoustic Improvised Music (NAAIM). I'm refusing to call jazz 'jazz' anymore, because it gets in the way of non NAAIM-enthusiasts' perception. Anyway what's in a name? (bad pun intended) Back to the topic: the full transcript is available at www.abc.net.au/radio radio national (under) Exhibit A. For some reason I can't paste the hyperlink, must be my new browser. Sorry Here's the intro: Although Pablo Picasso never traveled to Africa, he claimed the 'virus' of African art, which first struck him in Paris in 1907, stayed with him all his life. From Cape Town, curator Marilyn Martin of the Iziko South African National Gallery describes how their exhibition reveals the powerful influence of African masks and sculpture on Picasso and his fellow cubists.
