2007 Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival Commission:
Call for submissions

Following the success of the 2006 inaugural Melbourne Jazz Fringe Commission, which resulted in the creation of an extraordinary new work by pianist and composer, Jex Saarelaht, the Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival is now calling for submissions for the 2007 Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival Commission.

The Commission provides $1000 to a composer to write an extended work for an ensemble (greater than 5 piece) of his or her choice and also provides rehearsal fees for ensemble players. The commissioned work will be presented on the opening weekend of the 2007 Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival at BMW Edge on Sunday 29th April.

Interested parties are asked to provide a brief description of their proposal and a biography on one A4 page (font size 12 pt minimum). This should be emailed to [e-mail]. Audio support material is also welcome (1 CD) and should be sent to

Applications must be received by no later than March 1st; the winning submission will be announced on March 12th.

I'll just answer the first question cos I'm not qualified for to tackle the second...
Last year everyone on the board nominated I think 3 artists. We then called for submissions from those artists and voted on those submissions.
This year we've thrown it open and anyone can put in a submission including Jex.
We have no idea how many we'll get but we've kept the application process as simple and as brief as possible so that it's easy to apply and so that the we're not swamped with reading/listening matter.
