Sydneysiders too busy bustin' their arses to pay the rent to be bothered with the internet. My advice - serious Sydney renovation. Course of action - start again from scratch. KPIs - Premier with personality and guts. You know you're Premier is bad when he makes Bracksy look good!
Now, onto the article. Yes! Well written and researched. Not full of meaningless rhetoric. None of the ridiculous over-the-top flowery prose we get belted with by some writers. Written with obvious warmth and affection for the musicians and their music.
I've only hear TPI live once, and only snippets of recordings, so I'm in no position to comment on their music, other than to say that the live experience was the better of the two. You can hear their influences, but they are very clearly making Australian music.

Yeah, John writes with passion and knowledge of TPI, as he does in many of his reviews. John often goes off on stories, which can be quite amusing too, but sticks to the topic on this one.
I've had the pleasure of deping for both Mike and Warrick in TPI, and it was great both on a musical and social level. The group is comitted to the music for sure, but the friendship and support in the group is very evident at all times.
Gotta say, Roger Frampton was a special Artist, both as Improviser and Composer. He had an intensity and commitment to the music that should be example to us all.
Don't know what the Syd or Melb thing has to do with any o this?? TPI is a Syd band, but also an Australian Band. I'm a Melb cunt, but also an Ausy cunt!

Ten Part is surely one of the great bands we have. i'm very surprised you haven't any of their recordings because there is great music on them all. They don't sound American and they don't sound European either. Apparently when they played at the Chicago Jazz Festival the Americans were really intrigued by the fact that the band sounded so "different" to them (presumably so very unlike the US bands they hear frequently). I think their latest big project, the Five Bells Suite by Bukovsky - which I heard at Jazz/Now two years ago and which was also played at Wang that year, while needing some additional work to it - is a classic.

As Guts points out, casting Clare's piece into some form of the Sydney/Melbourne "rivalry" is pretty strange Who said anything about "rivalry"? I am not aware of any rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne. It was just a harmless and light-hearted aside about most of the content here being about Melbourne-based bands and gigs. My main intention was to point to a substantial and excellent piece of writing by John Clare, given all the recent discussion about jazz writing here. Sorry I mentioned two major Australian cities by name. I'll be sure to keep those words out of future posts.

Far out guys. You all need to chill out a bit. My first paragraph above...
"Sydneysiders too busy bustin' their arses to pay the rent to be bothered with the internet. My advice - serious Sydney renovation. Course of action - start again from scratch. KPIs - Premier with personality and guts. You know you're Premier is bad when he makes Bracksy look good!"
...was merely a response to Mark's remark...
"Rare: something Sydney-centric on this very Melbourne-centric (but supposedly Australian) forum."
Which is why my next paragraph started...
"Now, onto the article. Yes! Well written and researched. Not full of meaningless rhetoric. None of the ridiculous over-the-top flowery prose we get belted with by some writers. Written with obvious warmth and affection for the musicians and their music."
I don't know where ironguts got this from...
"Don't know what the Syd or Melb thing has to do with any o this?? TPI is a Syd band, but also an Australian Band. I'm a Melb cunt, but also an Ausy cunt!"
...especially as I wrote...
"You can hear their influences, but they are very clearly making Australian music."
So I really don't know what you're getting at freddy.

alimcbeal, i wasn't reacting to your very interesting post,
miss issaaccss, I was simply confused by your post. If it was a light hearted aside, then so was mine.

I don't think you're that touchy Scotty. It's undertandable the way you react to things.
