Seriously: I hate the frigging things, too. We had them foisted on us from above.
But what are you suggesting - that Australian artists should be given more stars merely because they're Australian? Is your idea of "balanced" a situation where Australian arists and albums are talked up beyond their worth? That's bullshit.
While I agree with you about the absurdity of star ratings, as far as Joe goes, well to my ears he has produced what I consider three-star records.
(At the SHS we try very hard to hold the line where 3 stars is a damn good record, just not a masterpiece.)
For all I know you may be right, but I'd like some names and examples to back up such a broad, sweeping statement.

Well that's a very interesting review. 'Despite the high levels of invention, [Chindamo's] predilection for ornate embellishment occasionally jars the spell, but that's a very subjective perspective.' So there's an objective one? And why the need to water things down in this way? Shand shows his hand. Very interesting indeed.

John Shand reviews quite a lot of Australian CD's and live concerts. Most of the time I find myself agreeing with John's review, that's the concerts I've attended or CD I have heard that is. He writes honestly and fairly in my opinion. As with Tim's reviews I prefer an honest assessment of the material e.g. his thoughts on Mark's Melbourne gig.
