AdvertisementAdvertisement Artist Barney McAll Genre Jazz/Blues Label Jazzhead Barney McAll's is a singular talent on the world stage. A few months after releasing his outstanding, highly personalised perspective on traditional Cuban music, Mother of Dreams and Secrets, he has expanded his horizons to embrace African and Indian music. What hits you, once again, is how thoroughly McAll has assimilated his source inspirations. He does not idly flirt with the different styles but marries himself to each and then produces unique offspring. His main collaborators here are brilliant cellist Rufus Cappadocia, playing a five-string instrument of his own devising, and veteran percussionist Badal Roy, famed for collaborations with Miles Davis, John McLaughlin and Ornette Coleman. Guests include former Fela Kuti drummer Jojo Kua and James Brown trombonist Fred Wesley. Despite the overt stylistic departure from the last album, there is one core similarity that is now a McAll trademark: a mesmerising quality permeating the music, whether it is atmospheric or more groove-based. This may well be one of the year's key releases. www.theage.com.au/news/cd-reviews/vivid/2006/02/21/1140284035969.html
